Lorito Scores a Natural Hat Trick & De Filippo Stops 25 Shots to Lift the Bears to 3-0 Shutout over Army

PROVIDENCE, RI – Sophomore Matt Lorito (Oakville, Ontario) scored a natural hat trick, striking twice on the power play and once short-handed, while junior Marco De Filippo (Auronzo Di Cadore, Italy) stopped all 25 shots he faced to help lead the Brown men's hockey team (2-3-2) to a 3-0 win over Army (3-6-1) on Saturday evening at Meehan Auditorium.

Lorito's hat trick was the first for a Brown player since Jesse Fratkin '11 scored three times in an 8-1 win over UConn on November 28, 2009, while De Filippo's shutout was Brown's first since a 3-0 win over St. Lawrence on March 20, 2010.

"I knew it was going to be a hard game," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "They (Army) played the game really aggressive and in your face. For us to get a win on home ice is a great thing. For us to come out in that third and stretch the one-goal lead to a three-goal lead was a good thing to see. Hopefully we are maturing as a team."

Clinging to a 1-0 lead entering the final 20 minutes of play, Lorito helped to break the game open, scoring twice in a span of 78 seconds during the first eight minutes of the third period to cap the hat trick.

With Brown on its fifth power play of the night, junior Dennis Robertson (Fort St. John, BC) fired a shot that went just wide, right of the cage. The puck bounced off the end boards to junior Matt Wahl (Wellington, FL) at the bottom of the right faceoff circle. Wahl sent the puck through the crease, and Lorito stuffed it home from the far side to give Brown a 2-0 lead at 6:25.

A penalty on freshman Joe Prescott (Norwell, MA) gave Army a chance on the power play just 19 seconds later, but it would be the Bears who would capitalize on the odd-man situation.

From behind his own net, Leets attempted to clear the puck up the boards. However, sophomore Massimo Lamacchia (Maple, Ontario) picked off the pass at the blueline and passed to Lorito, who one-timed the puck past Leets from the low slot, at the 7:43 mark.

Army would earn another late power play chance, but could not capitalize as De Filippo and the rest of the Bears' defense held on for De Filippo's first career shutout.

Lorito's first goal came just 4:55 into the game on the Bears' first power play chance.  After Army attempted to clear the puck out of the zone, senior Chris Zaires (Aberdeen, NJ) kept it in at the center of the blueline and sent it over to sophomore Ryan Jacobson (Greenwood Village, CO) on the right. Jacobson carried the puck behind the net and was initially denied on a wrap-around attempt. However, Lorito was there to knock the rebound in for the power play marker.

For the game, Brown outshot Army, 30-25. The Bears were 2-5 on the power play and 7-7 on the penalty kill. Leets recorded 27 saves for the visitors.

In the midst of a five-game homestand and a three-game non-league stretch, Brown will host Providence at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 24th in the 27th Annual Mayor's Cup. Brown's next League game is a 7:00 p.m. contest at Yale on December 1st.
