HAMILTON, NY – Trailing, 7-4, with under 10 minutes remaining in the game, the Brown men's hockey team (8-14-3, 5-11-2) fought back to within a goal, but the Bears' comeback attempt came up just short in a 7-6 loss to Colgate (17-10-3, 11-6-1) on Saturday evening at Starr Rink.
The game was a wild affair with Brown scoring three special teams goals – two short-handed and one power play, and one with both teams skating four players. The Raiders also had a special teams goal of their own, a short-handed goal during their three-goal second period.
The two teams played a back-and-forth first period, during which both Brown and Colgate scored three goals. The Raiders scored on the first shot of the game just 1:33 in, but the Bears answered 1:21 later, scoring on their first shot of the game. After collecting the puck in the neutral zone, junior Richie Crowley (Canton, MA) sent the puck on net from the red line and it found its way past Alex Evin for his second goal of the year.
Killing the first power play of the game, Brown grabbed a 2-1 lead just before the 10 minute mark when senior Jack Maclellan (Calgary, ALB) took the puck in on a partial breakaway and lifted it past Evin for his 14th goal of the season and second short-handed goal.
However, Colgate answered at 11:03 when Nick Prockow beat sophomore Marco De Filippo (Auronzo Di Cardore, Italy) on a wrap-around attempt from the right side of the net. Brown responded again, converting its first power play chance just 2:49 later, as sophomore Garnet Hathaway (Kennebunkport, ME) deflected a Massimo Lamacchia (Maple, ONT) point shot past Evin for his second goal of the season. Senior Bobby Farnham (North Andover, MA) also earned an assist on the goal.
The Raiders were not done though, as Spiro Goulakos tied the game for the third time with just 35 seconds left in the first period. After serving a matching roughing minor, Goulakos came out of the penalty box and skated down the right wing on a three-on-one rush. Goulakos opted to keep the puck and beat De Filippo from the right edge of the crease, as the teams headed into the first intermission knotted at three.
Things did not get any easier for the Bears in the second period, as Colgate scored three more times to take a 6-3 lead into the final period. John Lidgett made it 4-3 just 5:18 into the frame and then Austin Smith converted a two-on-one break with Chris Wagner at 10:47, chasing De Filippo from the game. With Brown on its third power play late in the frame, Joe Wilson tacked on a short-handed goal at 17:03, Colgate's fourth straight tally.
Brown got one back early in the third period when freshman Matt Harlow (Bridgewater, MA) beat Eric Mihalik, who had replaced Evin after Brown's third goal, from the right side of the crease. Maclellan earned an assist on the play, carrying the puck into the zone down the left wing, before centering for Harlow on the far side of the net.
However, Colgate regained the three-goal lead just four minutes later on a goal by Corbin McPherson.
Following the goal, the Bears went down a player after Farnham was issued a five-minute major penalty for charging. However, the penalty seemed to ignite the Bears, as senior Jeff Buvinow (Turnersville, NJ) scored Brown's second short-handed goal of the evening on the kill, bring the Bears to within 7-5 with 8:01 remaining. Then, after a Colgate penalty evened things up, four-on-four, sophomore Dennis Robertson (Fort St. John, BC) scored his second goal of the year to close the gap to 7-6 with 5:43 left.
However, that was as close as the Bears would get, as Colgate was able to hold on for the win.
Di Filippo finished with seven saves, allowing five goals in 30:47, before giving way to Clemente, who made 16 saves in 27:47. For Colgate, Evin stopped six shots in 13:52, while Mihalik made 17 saves in 46:08. Brown returns to action next weekend when it hosts Harvard and Dartmouth in a pair of ECAC and Ivy League games, the final two home contests of the 2011-12 season.
