Bears Tie Quinnipiac, 2-2

Bears Tie Quinnipiac, 2-2

PROVIDENCE, RI  – Quinnipiac erased a 2-0 first-period deficit with two goals in a span of 1:24 late in the second period as the Bobcats (12-7-5, 4-4-4) came back to earn a 2-2 tie with the Brown men's hockey team (6-7-2, 3-4-1) on Saturday evening at Meehan Auditorium.

Quinnipiac scored six seconds after a power play had expired and then cashed in on a power play for its second goal 1:24 later, as Zach Tolkinen scored what would prove to be the game-tying goal. For Brown, sophomore Dennis Robertson (Fort St. John, BC) scored his first goal of the season, while senior Jack Maclellan (Calgary, ALB) tallied his team-leading ninth goal, stretching his consecutive game goal-scoring streak to six games.

The Bears grabbed a 1-0 lead with 6:25 left in the first period when Robertson scored with 41 seconds left on a two-man advantage for Brown. Maclellan overlapped with Robertson at the top of the right faceoff circle, passing back-and-forth with Robertson, who unleashed a slap shot from the faceoff dot that beat Eric Hartzell near-side at 13:35. Sophomore Matt Wahl (Wellington, FL) also had an assist on the goal, his team-leading 11th of the season, as he earned a point for the fifth straight game.

Brown extended its leads to 2-0 with just 1:20 left in the first period on Maclellan's goal. Freshman Matt Lorito (Oakville, ONT) fed Maclellan from the left wing half wall and Maclellan deked Hartzell, before sliding the puck past him from the left side of the crease for his team-leading ninth goal of the year. Freshman Ryan Jacobson (Greenwood Village, CO) also earned an assist on the goal, tallying a point for the sixth straight game.

With the Bears still leading, 2-0, late in the second and Quinnipiac outshooting Brown, 14-6, in the period, Maclellan nearly gave the hosts a 3-0 lead with seven minutes left. Wahl passed up to Maclellan, in the slot, from behind the net, but his one-timer hit the crossbar.

The Bobcats had their third power play chance of the game at the 14:50 mark of the second and got on the board just six seconds after the penalty expired when Matthew Peca's shot from the top of the right faceoff circle got past sophomore Marco De Filippo (Auronzo Di Cadore, Italy) at 16:56.

Quinnipiac almost immediately went up on another power play after freshman Massimo Lamacchia (Maple, ONT) was called for tripping 13 seconds later and tied the score on that power play. Zach Tolkinen collected the puck from Loren Barron at the center of the blueline and blasted a shot that deflected off Jacobson's stick and went past De Filippo, tying the score at 2-2 with 1:40 left in the second.

Brown had another great chance to go ahead five minutes into the third when Kellen Jones was issued a five-minute major, but the Bears could never generate much of anything on the ensuing power play, as the score remained tied through the 10-minute mark of the final period.

Both teams had chances late in the third and into overtime, but neither Brown nor Quinnipiac could light the lamp, as the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

For the game, De Filippo finished with 32 saves, while Hartzell made 26 for the Bobcats. Brown will look to get back into the winning column next weekend when they travel to the North Country for a weekend series at St. Lawrence and Clarkson.
