Bears Outshoot Army, 54-19, Settle for 1-1 Tie

WEST POINT, NY – The Brown men's hockey team (3-3-1, 2-2-0 ECAC Hockey) posted a season-high 54 shots, but came up against a hot goalie in Army's Rob Tadazak, settling for a 1-1 tie against the Black Knights (1-5-4, 1-3-3) on Saturday evening at Tate Rink. Senior Bobby Farnham (North Andover, MA) scored the lone goal for the Bears, while senior Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA) made 18 saves.

The Bears dominated a scoreless opening period, outshooting Army 15-4, and peppering Tadazak relentlessly during the final four minutes of the frame. However, the first 15 minutes of the period were marred by five penalties; three against the Bears and two against the Black Knights, in a span of 10 minutes. Brown had a golden opportunity to score the game's first goal, with a two-man-advantage for nearly two full minutes, but with 18 seconds left a Brown penalty negated the two-man advantage and eventually led to Army's second power play of the game.

Once things settled down, at the 15:35 mark, the Bears were able to establish more of a rhythm, firing eight of their 15 first-period shots during the final 3:29 of the frame.

The Bears continued the offensive attack early in the second period, building a 24-5 advantage in shots six minutes into the stanza. Freshman Massimo Lamacchia (Maple, ONT) nearly gave Brown a lead at 6:29, blasting a shot from the left faceoff circle, but Tadazek gloved the puck out of the air to keep the game scoreless.

Brown finally broke through midway through the second on a goal by Farnham with each team skating four players. After Army's Mike Hull just missed giving the hosts a 1-0 lead when his shot on a breakaway went over the net, Farnham raced the other way and back-handed the puck past Tadazek from the bottom of the right faceoff circle. Senior Jack Maclellan (Calgary, ALB) and sophomore Matt Wahl (Wellington, FL) both earned their fourth assists of the year on the goal.

Brown took back-to-back penalties 1:45 apart late in the period and Army was able to break through with 50 seconds left on the second penalty to tie the game at 1-1 at the 15:28 mark. The Bears had trouble clearing the zone and Andy Starczewski fired the puck past Clemente from the top of the left faceoff circle, beating him glove-side.

The Bears continued to apply pressure to the Black Knights' defense in the third, and dominated the majority of the period, earning two separate power plays. However, Tadazak continued to frustrate the offense, making several high-quality saves to keep the game tied at 1-1.

Neither team could score on a power play chance late in regulation, as the teams headed to overtime with 1:17 remaining on a Bears power play. Another Army penalty 30 seconds into overtime, put the Bears up on a two-man-advantage. However, Army kept the Bears off the board and Clemente came up with a huge save just as the first penalty expired, stopping Bryant Skarda on a short-handed break away chance.

Both teams had a power play chance in overtime, but neither could find the game-winner, as the teams settled for the 1-1 tie.

Brown finished with a season-high 54 shots, outshooting Army, 54-19. The Bears were 0-8 on the power play, while the Black Knights were 1-8.

Brown continues action on Tuesday night when it returns home to host American International in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
