The Brown men's hockey team opens its 2011-12 season against Dartmouth on Friday, October 28, when the Bears travel to Hanover, NH for the fifth edition of the Ivy Showcase. Third-year head coach Brendan Whittet '94 will look to continue the Bears' upward trajectory in ECAC Hockey. Mark White, promoted to Associate Head Coach in August, also starts his third year at Brown, while first-year assistant coach Mike Souza rounds out the Bears' coaching staff.
Brown returns its entire goaltending corps, including senior Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA), junior Anthony Borelli (Grand Island, NY) and sophomore Marco De Filippo (Auronzo Di Cadore, Italy). Clemente has started the majority of games during his career and will look to add to his 2269 career saves, third best all-time at Brown. Borelli and De Filippo have both seen limited time, appearing in a combined 13 games.
The Bears return a young by experienced defensive unit. Sophomores Dennis Robertson (Fort St. John, BC) and Matt Wahl (Wellington, FL) have emerged as the top defensive pairing, scoring 17 and 13 points respectively last season. Robertson earned Second Team All-Ivy and ECAC All-Rookie honors last year and was a sixth-round draft selection of the Toronto Maple Leafs this summer. Seniors Jeff Buvinow (Turnersville, NJ) and Mike Wolff (Walpole, MA), both mainstays on the blueline over the past three seasons, will also play a large role in the Bears' defense. Junior Richie Crowley (Canton, MA) and sophomore Marc-Antoine Carrier (St-Michel-de-Bellechasse, QUE) round out the returning defensemen with 20 and 25 career games respectively. Defensive newcomers include Joey de Concilys (St. Catharine's, ONT), Taki Pantziris (Toronto, ONT), Kyle Quick (Buffalo, NY) will look to contribute immediately, while Greg Tang (Cambrdige, MA).
On the offensive side, the Bears need to replace the scoring and ice presence of the 2011 Ivy Player of the Year, Harry Zolnierczyk '11. Senior captain Jack Maclellan (Calgary, ALB) will shoulder most of this responsibility, leading the team in scoring each of the past two seasons. A 2011 Second Team All-ECAC honoree, Maclellan (31-40-71 in 91 career games) will provide leadership in all game situations for the Bears. Seniro assistant captain Bobby Farnham (North Andover, MA) and junior Chris Zaires (Aberdeen, NJ) will help Maclellan lead the Bears' high-energy offense. Sophomores Garnet Hathaway (Kennebunkport, ME) and Mark Hourihan (Lynnfield, MA) and senior Jarred Smith (Pepper Pike, OH) will also be looked upon for offensive contribution.
Rounding out the returnees are juniors Francis Drolet (Lachine, QUE), Jeff Ryan (Media, PA), and Marc Senecal (North Bay, ONT) and sophomores Mike Borge (Somerset, MA), Jake Goldberg (Langhorne, PA), Michael Juola (Lake Forest, CA), and Jimmy Siers (Mt. Prospect, IL). Offensive newcomers include Chris Draper (Calgary, ALB), Matt Harlow (Bridgewater, MA), Ryan Jacobson (Greenwood Village, CO), Massimo Lamacchia (Maple, ONT), and Matt Lorito (Oakville, ONT).
This season marks the 50th anniversary of Brown's George V. Meehan Auditorium, which opened during the 1961-62 season. Brown will feature a special center-ice logo as well as a patch that will be sported on its home and away uniforms. Both the men's and women's team will host a doubleheader on December 3, to celebrate the anniversary. The women will take on Princeton at 3:00, while the men face Yale at 7:00.
Following the season opener at Dartmouth, Brown concludes its season-opening weekend with a matchup against Princeton on Saturday, October 29. The Bears then return home to Providence for its home-opening weekend against Colgate and Cornell, November 4th and 5th.
