Bears Fall to Clarkson, 4-1

Bears Fall to Clarkson, 4-1

POTSDAM, NY – Junior Bobby Farnham (North Andover, MA) scored his sixth goal of the year to cut the Bears' deficit to 2-1 with 13:24 remaining, but Clarkson (13-13-2, 7-8-1) would score two straight goals to claim a 4-1 win over the Brown men's hockey team (7-12-4, 5-10-1) on Friday evening at Cheel Arena. The game was critical for ECAC positioning, as Clarkson, occupying the 8th and final home ice position, entered the game two points ahead of Brown in the standings. With the win, the Golden Knights, who hold the tiebreaker with the Bears, are now four points ahead of Brown, which is tied with St. Lawrence for ninth place after the Saints' 3-2 victory over Yale.

The two teams played through a scoreless first period, during which Clarkson held a 10-8 advantage in shots on goal. Brown opened the second period with 1:56 remaining on its third power play chance of the night and junior Jack Maclellan (Calgary, ALB) looked to get the Bears on the board with three shots, but Paul Karpowich saved one and the Clarkson defense blocked a pair, as the score remained 0-0.

The Golden Knights finally broke the scoreless tie midway through the second period when Tom Pizzo collected the puck from Jake Morley and Corey Tamblyn and beat junior Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA) for the 1-0 lead at 10:57. Allan McPherson doubled Clarkson's lead exactly six minutes later, scoring off an assist from Nick Tremblay at the 16:57 mark, as the Golden Knights capitalized on a 13-9 advantage in shots during the second period to build a 2-0 lead.

The Bears outshot Clarkson, 11-6, during the third period, and made it a one goal game on with Farnham's goal at the 6:36 mark, but Will Frederick responded for Clarkson at 14:56, giving the Golden Knights a 3-1 lead with just over five minutes left to play.

Head coach Brendan Whittet pulled Clemente with 2:26 remaining in favor of the extra attacker and the Golden Knights added an empty net goal at the 18:05 mark to account for the 4-1 final.

Special teams continue to plague the Bears, who finished 0-8 on the power play. In its last five games (0-5-0), Brown is now 1-35 on the man-advantage.

Clemente finished with 25 saves in 59:22, while Karpowich earned the win with 28 for the Golden Knights. The Bears continue action tomorrow night when they face St. Lawrence in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
