Two Third Period Goals Lift Clarkson Past Bears, 3-1

PROVIDENCE, RI – Mark Borowiecki's power play goal 2:06 into the third period snapped a 1-1 tie and would stand as the game-winner, as Clarkson (12-9-2, 6-4-1) battled back from a 1-0 deficit to earn a 3-1 victory over the Brown men's hockey team (7-8-4, 5-6-1) on Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium. Clarkson picked up two valuable points over the Bears, as the two teams entered the game tied with Cornell for 7th place in the ECAC standings with 11 points each.

The two teams played a scoreless first period, which saw two separate full two-minute four-on-four segments and two power play chances for the Golden Knights. Clarkson held an 11-9 advantage in shots, as both junior Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA) and Paul Karpowich stopped every shot they faced during the opening frame.

After killing three straight Golden Knight power play chances, the Bears' finally got one of their own, a five-minute opportunity after Lauri Tuohimaa was ejected for contact to the head-elbowing and a game misconduct at 4:17 of the second.

Brown needed less than a minute to break the scoreless tie, as freshman Matt Wahl (Wellington, FL) scored his third of the year at 5:10 to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.

After passing back-and-forth along the perimeter, junior leading scorer Jack Maclellan (Calgary, ALB) got the puck up top to freshman Dennis Robertson (Fort St. John, BC), who fired a rocket towards on net. Stationed at the right post, Wahl, got a stick on it and redirected it behind Karpowich for the lead.

The Bears still had 4:07 left on the power play, but saw limited opportunities to push the lead to two goals, and just nine seconds after returning to full strength, Clarkson tied the score at 1-1. Brown got caught running around a defensively and Jarrett Burton took the puck from Will Frederick, skated around a Bears defender, and back-handed the puck over Clemente's left shoulder for his second goal of the year. Julien Cayer, who served the Tuohimaa penalty, also assisted on the goal.

Clarkson went ahead, 2-1, just 2:06 into the third period, converting on its fifth power play chance of the game. Borowiecki was credited with the goal after his shot from the blueline deflected off a Brown player, popped up in the air and over Clemente, falling behind the Bears' goalie.

Brown pulled Clemente in favor of the extra attacker with 1:32 remaining and the Golden Knights secured the win with 50 seconds left when Nick Tremblay took a pass from Jake Morley and walked it into the open net for the 3-1 final.

Clemente recorded 34 saves, while Karpowich made 30 for the Golden Knights. Brown continues action next weekend when the Bears travel to Union and RPI for a pair of ECAC Hockey contests Friday and Saturday.
