BOSTON, MA – Second-ranked Boston University (7-1-5) battled back from an early, 2-0, deficit and then a 4-3 third-period deficit to earn a 4-4 tie with the Brown men's hockey team (3-2-3) on Saturday evening at Agganis Arena. For the Bears, it was their second straight tie against a team ranked in the national top-10, as Brown stretched its current unbeaten streak to four games (2-0-2).
The Bears came out strong and senior Jesse Fratkin (Burnaby, BC) quickly gave Brown a 1-0 lead, scoring on the first shot of the game for either team. The play developed when sophomore Chris Zaires (Aberdeen, NJ) skated towards the net from the bottom of the right faceoff circle. He fired the puck on cage and it popped up in the air, hitting the stick of senior Harry Zolnierczyk (Toronto, ONT), before dropping in the slot, where Fratkin was able to one-time it past Kieran Millan for the early lead.
Almost immediately after the goal, BU's Wade Megan raced in on a breakaway chance, only to be denied by junior Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA), keeping the Terriers off the board.
A great individual effort by Zolnierczyk gave the Bears a 2-0 lead just 1:36 later. Zolnierczyk stripped the puck away from BU on the forecheck and skated into the slot uncontested, before beating Millan stick-side low for his fourth goal in three games just 3:01 into the contest.
Brown nearly extended its lead to 3-0 in the ninth minute of play, when junior Jack Maclellan (Calgary, ALB) and freshman Garnet Hathaway (Kennebunkport, ME) combined on a beautiful give-and-go. Maclellan fed Hathaway on the right side, but his redirection hit the near post.
The Terriers raced the other way and got on the board on Ben Rosen's first career goal. After collecting the puck from Garrett Noonan at the bottom of circle, Rosen paused momentarily, before firing a low shot that beat Clemente stick-side low at 8:38.
After BU missed a chance on an open net look, Brown had two quality chances denied by Millan, one by Maclellan and the other by freshman Jake Goldberg (Langhorne, PA), as the score remained, 2-1, in favor of the Bears, through 13 minutes.
The Bears killed the only man-advantage opportunity for either team with under four minutes remaining in the period and just after the BU power play expired, Megan had another breakaway denied by Clemente, as the two teams headed into the first intermission with Brown leading, 2-1.
Boston University tied the score at 2-2 just 4:48 into the second. After Clemente made a save on a Joe Pereira shot from the slot, the play was not blown dead and Pereira took another whack at Clemente. The momentum pushed Clemente into the net and the puck fell out from between his arm and body, crossing the goal line.
Following the goal, the Bears got into some penalty trouble, which eventually added up to BU taking a 3-2 lead. After a call on freshman Dennis Robertson (Fort St. John, BC) at the 6:45 mark, BU went up on a two-man advantage just 54 seconds later when junior Bobby Farnham (North Andover, MA) was called for cross-checking. Roughly thirty seconds later, BU drew a delayed penalty on Zolnierczyk, pulling Millan for the extra skater for a six-on-three advantage lasting nearly 35 seconds.
Brown was able to touch the puck with five seconds remaining on the Robertson penalty, which gave the Terriers another 59-second two-man advantage. Clemente made five saves, all of which came from point-blank range, but BU finally broke through when Alex Chiasson connected at 9:24, and with 16 seconds left on the five-on-three. The Bears still had another 47 seconds to kill, which was helped in large part by another pair of saves from Clemente.
Brown finally earned its first power play chance of the night at 12:59 and the Bears immediately capitalized. After a pair of shots was blocked by BU, junior Jeff Buvinow (Turnersville, NJ) collected the puck at the top of the left circle and pushed it ahead for Farnham at the bottom of the circle. Farnham centered it for Maclellan in the slot, and the Bears' leading scorer one-timed the puck through the five-hole just 39 seconds into the power play for his fourth goal of the year.
Brown opened the third period with 1:48 remaining on its second power play of the night and had a few chances. The Bears held the puck in the zone after the power play expired and had time to get what has been one of its strongest even-strength lines out onto the ice. Freshman Mark Hourihan (Lynnfield, MA) did a great job to dig the puck out of the corner and sent it behind the net for classmate Garnat Hathaway (Kennebunkport, ME).
Hathaway passed the puck back towards Hourihan at the left corner, and it was picked up by senior David Brownschidle (Lawrenceville, NJ) just outside the left post. Brownschidle skated back towards the net and fired a shot from the top of the crease that Millan saved. However, he picked up the rebound, and while falling to his back, pushed the puck through the five-hole for his fourth goal of the year at the 2:24 mark.
Just 73 seconds after the goal, the Bears would have to kill a five-minute BU power play after a major called on Zolnierczyk. Brown was up to the challenge, helped in part by a BU penalty 1:51 into the penalty, as the two teams each skated with four players for the middle part of the Terriers' power play.
The Terriers tied the game for the third time at 12:51 when David Warsofsky's shot from the left side caromed off the end boards and right to Megan at the ride side of the crease. With Clemente still sliding over from the far post, Megan lifted it past Clemente, near side, tying the score at 4-4.
Megan's goal would be the final score for regulation, as Brown headed to its second straight overtime game against a top-10 opponent.
Clemente finished with 38 saves, including 16 of 17 in the first period, while Millan made 19 saves for the Terriers. After four straight road contests, Brown continues its stretch of games against teams currently ranked in the national polls when it hosts Union, currently ranked 13th, on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.
