HANOVER, NH - The Big Green skated out to a 3-0 first-period lead and never looked back as Dartmouth (4-10-0, 2-6-0) claimed an 9-4 victory over the Brown men's hockey team (5-10-1, 3-5-1) on Friday evening at Thompson Arena. The Bears attempted to come back on several occasions, but Dartmouth responded each time to prevent Brown from gaining any momentum. Junior Harry Zolnierczyk (Toronto, ONT) led the Bears with a pair of goals.
Both teams came out flying in the opening five minutes, which saw a lot of up-and-down action and several key saves by both sophomore Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA) and Dartmouth's Jody O'Neill. The Big Green grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 8:42 mark on a goal by Adam Estoclet. Estoclet batted sophomore Richie Crowley (Canton, MA) for the puck behind the Brown net, and buried his wrist shot from the bottom of the left circle to the near side for his third goal of the year.
Estoclet doubled Dartmouth's lead just four minutes later when he collected the puck from Evan Stephens and beat Clemente glove-side high from the bottom of the right circle. Nick Walsh scored less than a minute later, at 13:45, when his shot from the bottom of the right circle, beat Clemente five-hole.
The Bears had an offensive zone faceoff with 59.1 seconds left in the period and held possession in the zone for the remainder of the frame. However, they could not find the back of the net, as they headed into the intermission facing a three-goal deficit.
Senior Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY) replaced Clemente at the start of the second, and 4:53 later, the Big Green had a 4-0 lead. After Rosen made a save on a first attempt by Walsh, the rebound came right back out to the sophomore forward and he didn't miss with his second shot, sneaking the puck into the left side of the net under Rosen's stick.
Zolnierczyk got Brown on the board 31 seconds later when he skated into the zone all alone and beat O'Neill with wrist shot from the slot for his fifth of the year. Senior Jordan Pietrus (Winnipeg, MAN) started the play deep in the Bears' defensive zone, with a long pass to Zolnierczyk, at the far blueline.
The Big Green made it a four goal game with 5:22 left in the second when Kyle Reeds hit the upper right corner of the net from the opposite face-off circle for his third goal of the year.
Freshman Marc Senecal (North Bay, ONT) scored just 11 seconds into the third period to bring the Bears to within 5-2, knocking in the rebound of a shot by senior Sean McMonagle (Oakville, ONT) from the right edge of the crease. However, 39 seconds later Dartmouth held a four goal advantage when Scott Fleming put away a feed from Matt Reber 50 seconds into the frame.
Sophomore Jack Maclellan (Calgary, ALB) scored on a wrap-around off assists from junior Jeremy Russell (St. Albert, ALB) and freshman Chris Zaires (Aberdeen, NJ) at 3:12 to make it a 6-3 game, but Reber answered for Dartmouth 36 seconds later to give the Big Green a 7-3 lead and chase Rosen from the game.
Stephens increased Dartmouth's lead to 8-3, scoring with five seconds left on a Brown power play and with 5:46 left in the game. The Bears answered on their next power play, as Zolnierczyk tallied his second of the night at the 16:27 mark. Estoclet closed the game and his hat trick with a power play goal for the Big Green with 2:09 left to play.
Clemente stopped 17 shots for the Bears in 36:12, while Rosen made 14 saves in 23:48. O'Neill finished with 22 saves for the Big Green, who out shot the Bears, 40-26. Brown is off tomorrow and returns to action next Saturday, January 16, when it travels to New Haven, CT to face Yale in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
