PROVIDENCE, RI - Sophomore Jack Maclellan (Calgary, ALB) scored the game-winning goal and added an assist, helping to lead the Brown men's hockey team (3-7-1, 2-4-1) to its third straight victory, a 3-1 decision over Princeton (3-6-1, 2-5-1) on Friday evening at Meehan Auditorium. The win equals the Bears' win total from the 2008-09 regular season and also marks the first time since March 2, 2007 that Brown has defeated Princeton.
"I thought the guys focused on winning one battle and one shift at a time," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "I told them if they did that, the scoring would take care of itself and it did tonight."
After somewhat of a sluggish start for the Bears, who were outshot, 6-2, in the opening five minutes, Brown found its rhythm and ended the period with a 1-0 lead and a 12-10 advantage in shots.
The Bears' goal came on a strong shift by a mixed line for Brown. After senior Jordan Pietrus' (Winnipeg, MAN) shot from the left faceoff circle was saved by Zane Kalemba, the rebound popped out to freshman Chris Zaires (Aberdeen, NJ) at the right circle. Zaires fired a quick shot back in on Kalemba and the puck bounced out to Pietrus in the slot, who one-timed the puck over Kalemba's glove for the 1-0 lead.
Brown doubled its lead midway through the second period, when Maclellan scored his fourth goal in as many games. After saving a shot by Princeton's Mark Magnowski, sophomore Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA) flicked the puck out to Maclellan on his right. Maclellan skated the puck all the way into the zone and ripped a shot from the center of the slot, beating Kalemba glove-side high for his fourth goal in as many games.
The Tigers got one back at 7:05 of the third, when Cam MacIntyre's shot from the top of the right faceoff circle, beat Clemente glove-side after a faceoff win by Dan Bartlett. The goal came just minutes after an apparent score by Princeton was called back after the referees ruled that the puck had been kicked in.
At the time of Princeton's goal, Brown was getting outshot, 13-5, but the goal seemed to settle the Bears down a bit and they never allowed Princeton to get any closer.
"I give the guys a lot of credit for the way they battled after Princeton's goal," said Whittet. "They had us on our heels, but the guys went right back at them. It's a sign of maturity and improvement and I am thrilled with the way they responded to the goal."
It was senior Aaron Volpatti (Revelstoke, BC) who responded, scoring his fourth goal of the year at 16:23. Maclellan won a faceoff to Kalemba's right back to senior Sean McMonagle (Oakville, ONT), who fired a quick shot that Kalemba saved. However, the rebound bounced out to Volpatti at the opposite faceoff circle. All alone, he skated the puck in, waited for Kalemba to drop and lifted the puck into the near side for a 3-1 lead.
Princeton pulled Kalemba with 2:04 remaining, and despite the player advantage for the final two minutes, the Bears clamped down, preventing the Tigers from attempting a comeback.
Clemente stopped 36 shots for the Bears, while Kalemba made 27 saves for Princeton. Brown returns to action on Saturday night when it hosts #4 Quinnipiac in a 7:00 p.m. contest. Any fan that brings a new, unwrapped toy to the game will receive one free admission to the game per toy. All toys will be donated to the Hasbro Children's Hospital by the Bears' hockey team the week of December 13th.
