Bears Fall to Bentley, 3-2

PROVIDENCE, RI - Bentley (5-5-2) scored a pair of third-period goals four minutes apart to erase a 2-1 deficit and hand the Brown men's hockey team (0-7-1) a 3-2 loss in a non-league contest on Tuesday evening at Meehan Auditorium. A pair of Bears, junior Jesse Fratkin (Burnaby, BC) and sophomore Jack Maclellan (Calgary, ALB) scored their first goals of the season.

For the third game in a row, the Bears gave up a goal to the opposition in the opening four minutes of play. Bentley won the opening faceoff and kept the puck in play in the zone for 30 seconds. After Brown briefly gained possession, the Bears failed to clear the puck and Dustin Cloutier fired a wrist shot from the bottom of the left faceoff circle that beat freshman Anthony Borelli (Grand Island, NY) through the five-hole just 33 seconds into the game.

However, Brown responded 3:39 later when Fratkin scored his first goal of the season. After collecting the puck from senior Aaron Volpatti (Revelstoke, BC) along the right wing, Fratkin carried the puck into the zone and beat Kyle Rank from the top of the right circle, tying the game at 1-1.

Maclellan gave Brown a 2-1 lead at 11:41 of the second period, scoring his first goal of the year with each team skating four players. The play started when senior Sean McMonagle (Oakville, ONT), playing defense, poke-checked the puck away from a Bentley player, springing and odd-man rush the other way. Fratkin dug the puck out of the corner and passed to sophomore Jeff Buvinow (Turnersville, NJ), who fired a quick shot from the bottom of the left circle. Rank made the save, but got tied up on the right post and Maclellan dove at the puck, lifting it to the opposite corner of the net.

With Brown on the power play, senior Jordan Pietrus (Winnipeg, MAN) nearly gave the Bears a 3-1 lead with 24 seconds left in the second, put his shot from the right side clanged off the near post and out, as Brown headed to the second intermission, leading 2-1.

Bentley tied the game at 2-2 4:36 into the third period when Cloutier scored his second of the night, beating Borelli with a shot from the bottom of the right circle with the Falcons skating on their fourth power play of the night. Jamie Nudy gave Bentley a 3-2 lead at 8:21 of the third, redirecting an Aaron Stonacek slap shot over Borelli's glove from the edge of the crease.

At the midway point of the period, the Falcons went on a full two-minute two-man advantage after two Brown penalties at 9:46. Brown killed the entire two-minute advantage, as the Bears' defense blocked four Bentley shots and Borelli saved seven, including one with seven seconds left on the power play when he gloved the puck out of the air on a rebound of a Falcons' shot.

The Bears went up on a power play with 2:12 remaining and after gaining control in the zone, pulled Borelli with 1:26 left in the game. Senior Devin Timberlake (Port Alberni, BC) nearly tied it with 18 seconds remaining, but Rank made the stop from his attempt from the top of the crease, as the Bears dropped their sixth straight.

Borelli stopped 25 shots for the Bears, while Rank made 33 saves for Bentley. In the midst of a break from ECAC action, Brown continues action on Saturday evening when it hosts UConn in a 7:00 p.m. non-league contest.
