Bears Fight Back from 4-1 Deficit to Force Overtime, but Fall, 6-5

PROVIDENCE, RI - Junior Harry Zolnierczyk (Toronto, ONT) had two goals, including the game-tying goal, and an assist to lead Brown, but #9 Yale (3-2-2, 2-1-2) scored 2:32 into overtime to claim a 6-5 victory over the Brown men's hockey team (0-6-1, 0-4-1) on Saturday evening at Meehan Auditorium.

The Bulldogs grabbed a 1-0 lead just 2:51 into the game when Antoine Laganiere scored directly off a faceoff to sophomore Mike Clemente's (Great Falls, VA) right. Instead of pulling the puck back towards his defenders, Laganiere shot the puck and beat Clemente for the early lead.

Skating on their first power play of the night, Brown maintained control for the majority of the two-minutes, connecting for the tying goal just eight seconds after the man-advantage had expired. Freshman Richie Crowley (Canton, MA) kept the puck in along the left half-wall and sent it along the boards to sophomore Jarred Smith (Pepper Pike, OH) behind the net. Smith fed Zolnierczyk at the bottom of the right faceoff circle and he sent a wrist shot behind Ryan Rondeau at 10:03.

However, Yale responded just 1:29 later when Andrew Miller walked in on Clemente uncontested and beat him glove-side with a low shot. Josh Balch's first goal of the season on Yale's third power play of the night gave the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead with 5:14 remaining in the first period.

Another Yale power play goal by Tom Dignard with 1:12 remaining in the period gave the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

Freshman Anthony Borelli (Grand Island, NY) began the second period in the Brown net, earning his first career appearance.

Freshman Chris Zaires (Aberdeen, NJ) scored his second goal in as many games on a Brown power-play to bring the Bears to within 4-2 at 8:02 of the second period. After collecting the puck from senior Aaron Volpatti (Revelstoke, BC), Zaires skated through the slot and backhanded his shot past Rondeau stick-side.

However, the Bears may have celebrated a bit too long, as Kevin Peel regained a three-goal lead for Yale just 12 seconds later to make it a 5-2 game.

Smith brought Brown to within 5-3 with 4:19 left in the second, knocking in the rebound of a close-range shot by Zolnierczyk. With Rondeau still down on the ice after stopping Zolnierczyk, Smith tipped the rebound past his glove for his first goal of the season. Freshman Marc Senecal (North Bay, ONT) also earned an assist for his second point in as many games.

Senior Jordan Pietrus (Winnipeg, MAN) scored his third goal in two games 2:31 into the third period, knocking in the rebound of a shot taken by sophomore Jeff Buvinow (Turnersville, NJ) to bring the Bears to within one goal.

Zolnierczyk tied the game at 5-5 at the midway point of the third, completing a give-and-go with Zaires when he knocked the puck past Rondeau glove-side at 10:24, for his second goal of the evening. Following the goal, Billy Blase replaced Rondeau, who had made 14 saves, in net.

Yale had three third-period power play chances, including a 21-second five-on-three and then a four-on-three advantage with one minute remaining. Brown was able to kill all three chances and the teams headed for overtime, Brown's third overtime game of the season.

Broc Little capitalized on a Bears' defensive zone turnover and fired a soft wrist-shot from the top of the slot that beat Borelli through the five-hole.

Clemente made 13 saves in the first period, while Borelli stopped 23 shots in the remaining 42:32. Rondeau made 14 saves in 50:24, while Blase recorded three for the Bulldogs. Brown returns to action next week with a pair of non-league games at home. The Bears welcome Bentley to Meehan for a 7:00 game on Tuesday, while UConn comes to town for a 7:00 tilt on Saturday.
