Bears Open ECAC Schedule With 3-3 Tie at Union
SCHENECTADY, NY - Mike Schreiber scored the game-tying goal with 6:39 remaining in regulation to lift the Union men's hockey team (3-3-2, 0-0-1) to a 3-3 tie with the Bears (0-1-1, 0-0-1) in the ECAC opener for both teams Friday evening at Messa Rink. Brown led for the majority of the game, up until Schreiber's goal, holding leads of 1-0, 2-0, 2-1, 3-1, and 3-2.
Junior Jeremy Russell (St. Albert, ALB) wasted little time in giving the Bears a lead, scoring his first goal of the season just 32 seconds into the game. Brown won the opening faceoff and put the offensive pressure on immediately, leading to the Bears' first goal of the season.
After senior Jordan Pietrus' (Winnipeg, MAN) shot from the left side was blocked, the rebound came to sophomore Jack Maclellan (Calgary, ALB), who cycled the puck over to junior Harry Zolnierczyk (Toronto, ONT) in the left corner. Zolnierczyk sent the puck up to Russell at the left point and he unleashed a slap shot that beat Corey Milan glove-side for the early lead.
Senior Aaron Volpatti (Revelstoke, BC) nearly doubled Brown's lead 25 seconds into the Bears' only power play chance of the frame. Senior Devin Timberlake (Port Alberni, BC) set Volpatti up on the doorstep and his one-timer clanged off the post.
Volpatti got another chance to increase Brown's lead early in the second and this time he delivered. With Russell in the penalty box for hitting from behind 46 seconds into the second period, Volpatti intercepted a Union pass in the neutral zone. He took the puck to the right wing, got around his defender and skate in all alone on Milan, and lifted the puck past the goalie, stick-side just 12 seconds into the Union power play.
However, the Dutchmen converted on the man-advantage 47 seconds later to make it a one goal game. Kelly Zajac fired a shot from the left side that sophomore Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA) saved, but the puck trickled behind him and over the line before he could clear it.
Brown went on the penalty kill just 23 seconds after Union's first goal, but Zolnierczyk scored another unassisted short handed goal for the Bears to regain the two-goal lead. Zolnierczyk intercepted a Union pass inside Brown's offensive zone, turned and beat Milan with a wrist shot from the top of the crease, giving Brown a 3-1 lead at 2:54.
Again, Union made the Bears pay for the penalty, bringing the score to 3-2 on a Mike Schreiber goal at 4:21, just 13 seconds after their fourth power play of the game had expired.
Freshman Richie Crowley (Canton, MA) nearly gave Brown a 4-2 lead in a power play chance late in the second period, but his bid from the right side of the crease was denied by Milan, who got his left leg out just in time. Crowley picked up his own rebound, looking top shelf, but his second-chance shot sailed over the net.
Union outshot the Bears, 14-4, in the third period and tied the game with 6:39 remaining on Schreiber's second goal of the night. After collecting the puck from Adam Presizniuk, Schreiber fired a shot from the left point that appeared to deflect off a Brown defenseman, before hitting the near post and bouncing in.
The Bears had a pair of third-period power play chances, including one with 3:01 remaining, but couldn't capitalize, as the teams headed for overtime, Brown's second straight overtime contest.
Both teams had chances in the extra frame. Zolnierczyk was denied on a wrap around attempt with under three minutes remaining and then seconds later both Pietrus and Crowley had shots blocked by the Union defense. After a save by Clemente in the final seconds, the Dutchmen had an offensive zone faceoff with 7.7 seconds remaining and were able to get one shot off, but it sailed wide of the net and Brown tied the puck up in the final seconds.
Clemente finished with xx saves, while Milan stopped xx shots for the Dutchmen. Brown returns to action tomorrow evening when it faces RPI in a 7:00 p.m. league contest.
