PROVIDENCE, RI - Five different players scored and nine different Bears earned at least one point, including senior Devin Timberlake (Port Alberni, BC), who notched three assists, to lead the men's ice hockey team to a 6-1 victory over Ontario Institute of Technology in an exhibition game Saturday evening at Meehan Auditorium.
The Bears wasted little time in scoring, earning a 1-0 lead on the first shot of the game in the first shift just 25 seconds in. After winning the opening faceoff, Timberlake started a give-and-go with freshman Chris Zaires (Aberdeen, NJ). From the bottom of the faceoff circle, Timberlake sent one last pass to the slot, where Zaires tipped the puck over Jason Guy's left shoulder for the early lead.
The Ridgebacks would go on to outshoot Brown, 7-3, in the period, but the Bears added one more goal to head into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead. Skating on their first power-play of the game, Brown maintained possession towards the tail end and freshman Richie Crowley (Canton, MA) struck just one second after the advantage expired for the Bears' second goal.
Junior Jeremy Russell (St. Albert, ALB) started the play when he passed down low to Timberlake on the left post. Timberlake quickly sent the puck up to senior Aaron Volpatti (Revelstoke, BC) in the slot, who tipped it over to Crowley. With Guy still hugging the far post, Crowley had time to settle the puck and lift it into the open net before Guy was able to slide back over.
Junior Harry Zolnierczyk (Toronto, ONT) increased Brown's lead to 3-0 at 7:32 of the second, scoring on a power-play. Sophomore Jack Maclellan (Calgary, ALB) sent the puck up to Russell on the right point. Russell moved to his left and dropped the puck for Zolnierczyk, who skated into the high slot, beating Guy glove-side.
Volpatti increased Brown's lead at 11:13 of the third period, when he one-timed a feed from Zaires past Guy for a 4-0 advantage. The Ridgebacks got on the board at 12:49 on a goal by Mike Noyes, but sophomore Jeff Buvinow (Turnersville, NJ) regained a four-goal lead for Brown when he put away a pass from senior Jordan Pietrus (Winnipeg, MAN) just 28 seconds later.
Pietrus accounted for the final goal, scoring on a power-play with assists going to Buvinow and Crowley.
Senior Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY) earned the start in net and made 10 saves, before giving way to freshman Anthony Borelli (Grand Island, NY), who stopped two of three shots. Guy recorded 26 saves for UOIT. The Bears return to action next weekend when they travel to New York's Capital District for a pair of ECAC games against Union and RPI.
