Newport, Rhode Island - The Brown men’s golf team showed improvement in the final two rounds of the prestigious Adams Cup of Newport, finishing the tournament in 16th place with a 54-hole 953 at the tournament held at the par-72 Newport National Golf Club. Southern Methodist (SMU) came from behind to win the team championship by six shots with a 54-hole 876.
Several Top 25 teams competed in the 17-team tournament that came down to the final day’s play, with the Mustangs shooting a tournament low 291. SMU’s six-shot victory came over Georgia Southern (882), followed by New Mexico (884), Ohio State (887), Furman (888), Connecticut (894), Central Florida (896), DePaul (908), William & Mary (910), Southern Mississippi (912), Francis Marion (913), Bryant (917), Rhode Island (919), temple (919), Hartford (926), Brown (953) and St. Joseph’s (956).
Brown senior Michael Amato improved each round, shooting a 54-hole 233 on rounds of 79-78-76 to place 55th individually. Coach Michael Hughes also got a solid performance from freshman Jack Mylott, who shot 81-76-79—236 to finish 67th.
Bears’ freshman JD Ardell was Brown’s third top scorer, shooting a three-round 243 on scores of 82-79-82. Senior captain John Giannuzzi had a solid final day and finished at 249 (81-89-79), while freshman Chris Williams came in at 252 after shooting 89-82-81.
The Bears will be back in action again at the
ECAC Championship, October 9-10, at the Blue Heron Pines Golf Club
in New Jersey.
