Nov. 13, 2001

Brown University junior linebacker Joel Barone (Shirley, NY) was named the Ivy League's Defensive Player of the Week following his performance in Brown's 41-16 win over Dartmouth last week.

Barone, who leads the Ivy League in tackles, registered a game high 15 tackles against the Big Green and made a jarring hit that put Brown in control of the game. Early in the third quarter, Barone sacked Dartmouth quarterback Jason Kinder, forcing a fumble which was picked up by senior Uwa Airhiavbere, who ran the football into the end zone for a touchdown, giving the Bears a 27-10 lead.

Barone, a graduate of William Floyd High School, earned his first start in Brown's third game of the season vs. Rhode Island, starting in place of injured linebacker Andrew Gallagher. He has made the most of his opportunity, leading the Bears in tackles with 94 (48 solo, 46 assists). He made a career-high 16 tackles against Cornell and recorded 15 tackles vs. Penn and Yale. He is currently ranked 6th in the nation with 13.4 tackles per game.
