Brown's Anjel Gutierrez Named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week

Sept. 22, 2003

Providence, RI -

Brown junior outside linebacker Anjel Gutierrez (Bellflower, CA) was named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week for his outstanding play and first career touchdown in Brown's 21-3 win over Albany on Saturday.

Gutierrez registered 7 tackles for the Bears (4 solo, 3 assisted) and picked-off a pass deep in Albany territory and returned it 20 yards for his first collegiate touchdown. He also had a tackle for a loss.

Gutierrez' play helped the Brown defense hold Albany to just three points, the fewest points yielded by the Bears' defense since 1998 when Brown allowed just three points against Columbia in a 10-3 win. Brown's defense also held Albany to just 84 second half yards, shutting out the Great Danes for the last three quarters.

Gutierrez has been a standout player for the Bears throughout his career. He ranked fourth on last year's team in tackles with 44, while making four tackles for a loss and two quarterback sacks. Gutierrez registered a career high 10 tackles against Princeton last year.
