Providence, RI - Looking for back-to-back Ivy League Championships for the first time ever, ninth-year Brown head football head coach Phil Estes will welcome 104 players to the beginning of pre-season football camp. The Bears will undergo physical testing on Monday, August 21 at 10:00 a.m., with full practice beginning on Tuesday, August 22, featuring split squad practices at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
The Bears will play a pre-season scrimmage on September 2 against Union College at Brown Stadium. Estes' squad will open its 129th season of intercollegiate play at home against Georgetown on September 16, and will begin the defense of its Ivy title on September 23 at home against Harvard.
While the 2005 season is in the books as Brown's only outright Ivy Championship, the Bears will look to pick up where they left off a year ago when coach Estes' squad captured its last eight games, and were ranked 15th in the final Sports Network National I-AA poll. Estes has built a solid foundation for the Brown football team and returns five starters on offense and five on defense, including five returning All-Ivy players will be disbursed among 16 returning players from Brown's final defensive depth chart and 13 returning players from its offensive depth chart.
Brown's defense will be built around senior All-American linebacker Zak DeOssie, a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award as the nation's top defensive player. Senior All-Ivy quarterback Joe DiGiacomo returns to direct the Bears' offense and he'll be helped by the return of senior All-Ivy wide receiver Lonnie Hill, senior All-Ivy tackle Alex Doty, and senior tailback and tri-captain Brandon Markey, who looks to fill the shoes left by the graduation of All-American running back Nick Hartigan. In addition, junior All-Ivy kicker Steve Morgan returns to the lineup after leading the nation in field goals.
