Brown Finishes 2002 Season With 35-28 Football Win Over Columbia

Providence, RI - Senior runningback Joe Rackley scored on a two yard run with 1:02 remaining to lift Brown to a 35-28 Ivy League victory over Columbia in the final game for both teams. Brown earned its second straight win and ends the season with a 2-8 record, 2-5 in the Ivy League.

Rackley finished the game with 101 yards on 27 carries, running for 100 or more yards in each of Brown's final three games.

Brown junior quarterback Kyle Slager passed for three touchdowns and ran for another. Slager, who completed 29 of 46 passes for 323 yards, threw touchdown passes of 8 yards to sophomore Chris Walther, 32 yards to freshman Jarret Schreck, and 5 yards to All-American wide receiver Chas Gessner. He also ran for a five yard touchdown.

Gessner, the nation's top receiver in receptions per game, made 14 catches for 118 yards. His 114 receptions this season are third best in NCAA I-AA history.

The game ended when Brown senior linebacker Joel Barone picked off a Columbia pass with no time left on the clock and the Lions driving for the game-tying touchdown. Barone, Brown's top tackler this season, registered eight tackles for the day, including two tackles for a loss.. Senior Jeremiah Watts made a game high 10 tackles for the Bears, while Shaun Eidson added eight tackles.
