Albany, New York - Sophomore tailback Nick Hartigan ran for 126 yards and a touchdown to lead the Brown football team to a 21-3 season opening win over Albany.
Brown got on the scoreboard early and never looked back. Sophomore tailback Tristan gave the Bears a 7-0 lead when he scored on a three-yard run with 10:21 left in the first quarter.
The Great Danes narrowed the score to 7-3 with a field goal at the 7:09 mark of the first quarter.
Hartigan lifted the Bears to a 14-3 halftime lead when he bulled his way into the end zone on a fourth and one at the Albany one yard line.
While the third quarter was scoreless, Brown controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage. After a Brown drive stalled at the Albany four-yard line, Brown's defense responded. Junior outside linebacker Anjel Gutierrez picked off a pass at the Albany 20 yard line and scampered into the end zone to give Brown the final margin of victory, 21-3.
Senior quarterback Kyle Slager had an efficient day for the Bears, completing 16 of 23 passes for 188 yards. On the receiving end, sophomore Jarrett Schreck caught 9 passes for 91 yards, while sophomore Lonnie Hill made 5 catches for 49 yards.
Defensively, junior safety Craig Young led the Bears with 9 tackles and a fumble recovery. Senior Drew Gallagher, who missed all of last season with an injury, returned to action with eight tackles, including one for a loss. Sophomore Jamie Gasparella also had eight total hits and broke up two passes.
