Providence, Rhode Island - Brown football coach Phil Estes announced today that defensive back A.J. Cruz '13 (Lake Forest, CA) and defensive tackle Ross Walthall '13 (Carmel, IN) have been elected Brown Football captains for the upcoming 2012 season.
"I could not be happier in the selection of our captains," said Estes. "Both have proven to be extremely hard workers throughout their careers, and great representatives of the Brown Football Team. I'm proud of our new captains, and expect them to be great leaders to bring us out next championship."
One of the most respected players in the Ivy League, Cruz is a three-time All-Ivy selection, including a two-time first team All-Ivy honoree. He ranked fifth on last year's Brown team with 60 total tackles, and led the Bears with three interceptions, second best in the Ivy League. Cruz returned a kick-off 83 yards for a touchdown against Dartmouth in 2011, and led the Ivy League in kick-off returns, averaging 31.15 yards per return, fourth best in the nation. He has eight career interceptions.
The 6-2, 275, Walthall is a two-year starter at defensive tackle for the Bears. He made 20 tackles in 2010, and had nine stops in 2009. Considered one of the strongest defensive players in the Ivy League and an exciting pass rusher, Walthall has two career quarterback sacks and four tackles for a loss. He had a big game in Brown's shutout win over Princeton last year with six tackles against the Tigers.
