A second team All-Ivy selection for the Bears, Smithwick led the Brown team with 77 total tackles and three interceptions. He was named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week twice in 2011, first when he helped the Brown defense to its first shutout since 1990 in a 34-0 win over Princeton. In the win over the Tigers, Smithwick had a 36-yard interception for a touchdown just 57 seconds into the game, while making eight tackles, including six solo stops, and a tackle for a loss of 10 yards.
An Economics/Political Philosophy concentrator at Brown, Smithwick earned Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time after leading the Brown defense to its second straight home shutout in a win over Penn, with seven tackles, one tackle for a loss, a forced fumble and an interception that set-up Brown's first field goal in a 6-0 win.
Smithwick helped the Bears' 2011 team to a 7-3 overall record and a second place finish in the Ivy League standings.
