Dan Smithwick Named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week
Providence, Rhode Island - Brown University outside linebacker Daniel Smithwick '12 (Danville, CA) was named the Ivy League's Defensive Player of the Week for leading the Brown defense to its first shutout since 1990 in the Bears' 34-0 win over Princeton on Saturday.
His 36-yard interception for a touchdown came just 57 seconds into the game and gave Brown all the points it would need in the shutout of the Tigers. Smithwick read the play perfectly, stepping out into the flat to intercept his second pass of the season, and then racing 36-yards for a touchdown.
Smithwick also made eight tackles, including six solo stops, and a sack for a loss of 10 yards on a tight end option pass.
Smithwick ranks second on the Brown team with 38 total tackles, including 22 solo stops. He and his Brown teammates will be back in action again on Saturday, October 22, traveling to Ithaca, New York to face the Cornell Big Red. Game time is 12:30 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field.
