Providence, Rhode Island - Brown Football coach Phil Estes has announced that senior outside linebacker Anjel Gutierrez (Bellflower, CA), senior offensive lineman Will Burroughs (Yuma, AZ), and senior offensive lineman Lawrence Rubida (Arlington, VA) have been named Brown Football captains for the 2004 season.
"Our team picked three outstanding leaders both on the field and off," said Estes. "Anjel, Will and Lawrence are complete captains, providing a physical presence on the field and a vocal presence off the field and in the community."
Gutierrez led the Bears defense with three interceptions last season, and ranked fourth with 64 total tackles. His 5.5 tackles for a loss were tied for second best. In Brown's Ivy opener against Harvard, Gutierrez picked-off a pass on the Crimson's first play from scrimmage and returned it 22 yards. An honorable mention All-Ivy selection in 2003, Gutierrez led the Bears with 12 tackles against Cornell, including two tackles for a loss of 13 yards and a quarterback sack for a loss of 7 yards. He was named the Ivy League's first Defensive Player of the Week after having a big afternoon against Albany, making 7 tackles against the Great Danes and picking- off a pass, returning it 20 yards for a touchdown.
Burroughs, an honorable mention All-Ivy selection in 2003, played a key role in the development of last year's offensive line, and helped block for 408.5 yards in total offense. In addition, the two-year starter at tackle led the Bears' front line that blocked for the Ivy League's top rusher, Nick Hartigan, who ran for a school record 1,498 yards, fourth best in Ivy history. He is also co-president of Brown's Student Athlete Advisory Board.
Rubida missed all of the 2003 season due to injury. He was graded Brown's top offensive lineman in 2002, and is looking forward to returning to a starting role in 2004.
