The Brown men's crew team dropped to Princeton and Yale in their fifth and sixth races of the season on Saturday, May 1. Although both varsity teams lost their races, the freshman squads had a very good day and won all their races.
The varsity lost to Princeton by 7.2 seconds (5:36.6-5:43.8) in the morning. Then weary with the effort they'd made in the morning against the Princeton crew, ranked second in the eastern coaches poll, they lost to Yale in the afternoon . The second varsity lost to Princeton by 4.1 seconds (5:50.3-5:54.4) and also lost to Yale in the afternoon.
Both Brown freshmen crews won twice on the day with the race against Princeton proving to be the most significant for the first freshman. The Princeton first freshman had been ranked second in the latest coaches' poll versus the Brown first freshman who were ranked third.
Times at Princeton were :Brown first frosh 5:45.2; Princeton, 5:49. Second frosh: Brown, 6:02.1; Princeton, 6:12.4.
The times at Yale were: Varsity, Yale, 5:38.2; Brown, 5:42.5, Second varsity: Yale 5:47.5; Brown, 5:54.2; Yale third varsity, 5:55.7. First freshmen: Brown 5:42.9; Yale, 5:47.9. Second freshmen: Brown 6:01.2; Yale, 6:11.1.
The Bears will return to action when they compete in the Eastern Sprints on Sunday, May 16.
