Bears Fall to Harvard by One Second

April 12, 2009

Cambridge, MA - The Bears dropped a tight race against Harvard on Saturday, as the varsity eight was nipped by only a second on the Crimson's home course. Bruno came back with solid wins in the second varsity eight and second freshman eight, however, as the crews dealt with rough conditions all day.

In the first race of the day, Harvard's varsity eight crossed the line in a solid time of 5:47, followed by the Bears at 5:48. Brown's lineup for the event was, from bow, Christian Crynes (Seattle, WA), Chris Bowman (Wilmette, IL), Matt Wheeler (Eugene, OR), Cole Bonner (Chicago, IL), Ben Duggan (Bingham, UK), Scott Morgan (Palo Alto, CA), Nick Ritter (Huntsville, AL), Gareth Seymour (Niagara Falls, ON), and coxswain Rob O'Leary (Fayetteville, N.Y.).

Despite the tough loss, the Bears came back strong in the second varsity eight, knocking off Harvard by an impressive five-second margin. Brown illustrated its depth by finishing with a time of 5:56, while Harvard came in at 6:01. After Harvard wins in the varsity four and freshman eight, Brown wrapped up the racing with another strong win, taking the second freshman eight event by three seconds.

The Bears will be back in action next weekend when they host Northeastern at 2:30 p.m.
