Boston, MA - The No. 3 ranked Brown men's crew defeated Boston University in all four races on the Charles River in Boston on Saturday morning.
The Varsity eight, comprised of senior Sam Searle (Truro, Nova Scotia) at stroke, junior Colin Keogh (Greenwich, CT), senior Ben Harrison (Dedham, MA), senior Dave Coughlin (Havertown, PA), sophomore Gareth Seymour (Niagara Falls, ONT), junior Ryan McShane (Eugene, OR), junior Chris Greene (Cincinnati, OH), junior Paul Strombom (Seattle, WA) at bow and sophomore Rob O'Leary (Fayetteville, NY) at cox, crossed the finish line in 6:13.4, as BU came in behind at 6:26.8.
"The Brown varsity eight took charge right away," said head coach Paul Cooke. "They rowed aggressively and were able to move ahead significantly in the first 1,000 meters. They were able to keep their pace going pretty well throughout the race and come home with a good, solid victory."
The second varsity of senior Joe Donahue (Shrewsbury, MA) at stroke, junior Jamie Marcus (Dover, MA), junior Garrett Kirk (Boston, MA), sophomore Matt Wheeler (Eugene, OR), sophomore Sean Medcalf (Philadelphia, PA), sophomore Zack Gazzaniga (Sharon, VT), junior James Rowan (Fairfax, VA), senior Evan Panich (Marblehead, MA) at bow and sophomore Meghan McKeon (Atlanta, GA) at cox, defeated BU with a time of 6:18.8. The Terriers cruised in shortly behind the Bears, with a time of 6:37.8.
Brown's novice eight also came in first with a 6:17.6 over BU's 6:29.9, and the third varsity squad placed first, defeating two BU crews and the Brown second freshman crew with a 6:14.2. Boston's second freshman crossed the line at 6:31.4, and its third varsity team came in third with a 6:39.1. The Bears' second freshman placed fourth with a time of 6:43.8.
The Bears are back in action next weekend, as they travel to Harvard on Saturday, April 17. The varsity begins at 8:48 a.m.
