Men's Crew Begins Season with Victory over Yale

Derby, CT - In its 2008 spring opener, the Brown men's crew won three of its five races against Yale on Saturday morning. Bruno's varsity eight, and both its second and third varsity eights earned first place finishes, while the Bears' second freshmen four and novice eight earned second during their races.
Despite the strong tailwinds and choppy water, junior coxswain Rob O'Leary (Fayetteville, NY) helped lead Brown's varsity eight to a first-place finish with a time of 5:28.78, as Yale came in right behind with a 5:30.44. In the varsity boat was Scott Morgan (Palo Alto, CA) at stroke, co-captain Colin Keogh (Greenwich, CT) in the seven seat, Gareth Seymour (Niagara Falls, ONT) in the sixth seat, Ben Duggan (Bingham, UK) in five, Cole Bonner (Chicago, IL) in four, Garrett Kirk (Boston, MA) in the third seat, Chris Greene (Cincinnati, OH) in two and at bow was co-captain Paul Strombom (Seattle, WA).
Also earning first was Brown's second varsity, coming in at 5:39.66 to Yale's 5:53.35. Leading the second varsity was sophomore coxswain Devin Wilmot (Saratoga Springs, NY), as Nick Ritter (Huntsville, AL) was at stroke, Mike Snyder (San Francisco, CA) in the seven seat and Greg Stepina (Tallahassee, FL) in the six seat. In the five seat was Matt Wheeler (Eugene, OR), followed by Sean Medcalf (Philadelphia, PA) in seat four, Ryan McShane (Eugene, OR) in three, James Rowan (Fairfax, VA) in the second seat and at bow was Christian Crynes (Seattle, WA).
The third varsity eight race was another close one, as Bruno finished with a 5:52.62. Yale came in behind with a 5:54.20. In the freshman four race, Yale "A" defeated Bruno to take first place (6:36.28) as Brown came in second (6:49.88), and Yale "B" in third (7:03.03).
The novice eight race came right down to the wire, as Yale crossed the line first with a 5:40.22, as Brown posted a 5:41.81. In the freshman boat was coxswain Erin Alpert (Purchase, NY), Chris Bowman (Wilmette, IL) at stroke, Brendan Nolan (Roswell, GA) in the seven seat, Brent Mylrea (McFarland, WI) in the six seat, Dan Aziz (Oakville, ONT) in the five and Matt See (San Francisco, CA) in seat four. In the third seat was Jim McLaughlin (Ridley Park, PA), as George Brennan (Bloomfield, CT) was in the second seat and at bow was Geoff Martin (Boxford, MA).
Up next, the Bears will host Boston University on Saturday, April 5, and then Harvard on Saturday, April 12.
