Men’s Crew Takes Sixth at Eastern Sprints, Bears Fifth in Team Points

WORCESTER, Mass. – Brown University men's crew advanced all five boats to the grand finals, placing sixth overall in the varsity eight, as the Bears competed at the EARC Eastern Sprints Sunday on Lake Quinsigamond.

The Eastern Sprints is made up of the top rowing schools in the East and also determines the Ivy League Championship. Yale captured the varsity eight to win the Ivy League title for the third straight year, while Brown placed fifth in the Rowe Cup standings, awarded to the school with the highest number of total points.

"It was a good accomplishment to get everyone into the grand finals," said head coach Paul Cooke. "To keep the guys focused, intent on what they wanted to do to the extent that they were able to make the grand finals was a credit to them."

The varsity, second varsity and third varsity boats all bested their seeds by two spots, one spot and three spots, respectively. Brown joined Harvard and Princeton as one of only three schools to send all five boats to the grand finals.

"I felt that it was a day where we were able to advance where we came in, almost all of the crews finished ahead of their seeding, so a credit to the guys for hanging in there with a pretty solid performance today," added Cooke.

The morning heats featured wavy conditions, but it did not affect the racing, as 62 out of 69 boats broke the six-minute mark. Brown opened the afternoon finals with the fifth varsity grand final, as the Bears made a late push during the final 500 meters to challenge Navy, but crossed in fourth place at 6:02.050.

In the fourth varsity grand final, Princeton took an early lead, before Harvard, Navy and Boston University joined the Tigers as a close group at 1,000 meters. Brown was able to pass Dartmouth early at 500 meters and eventually crossed the finish line in fifth place at 5:52.473. Harvard came back to win the race in a time of 5:43.168.

Harvard raced out to an early lead in the third varsity grand final, but Brown made a push in lane six to remain in contention early in the race. Yale then pulled up to Harvard around the midway point to form an open-water lead over Princeton in third place. Harvard pulled away down the stretch to claim the race at 5:37.026 before the Bears beat their seed to finish fourth at 5:44.123.

In the second varsity grand final, Yale and Princeton jumped out to the early lead with Boston University not far behind. The top three crews moved out ahead of the rest of the pack, followed by Harvard in fourth and Cornell and Brown back just a few seats at the midway mark. Princeton captured the race at 5:35.573, while the Bears finished sixth to best their seed in a time of 5:43.696.

In the final race of the day, the varsity eight grand final, Yale held a slim lead over Harvard at 250 meters. The Bears raced out of lane six and were leveling off with Dartmouth and Boston University a few seats back from the leaders. Nevertheless, the Terriers made a move to the leaders and challenged Princeton for the bronze medal. Yale beat Harvard for the title at 5:30.700, while the Bears crossed in sixth place at 5:40.626.

"They brought a really good attitude today," said Cooke on the varsity crew. "We have guys that have been working really hard to get to the standard and speed of the league, and they're not there yet, but they've got the resolve that if they just keep at it they are on the right path."

Brown will return to the water on June 2-4 for the IRA National Championship on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.
