HENLEY-ON-THAMES, United Kingdom – The Brown men's crew opened the 2014 Henley Royal Regatta with a convincing win by the freshmen eight to kick off the prestigious five-day event on Wednesday morning.
The Brown freshmen downed the University of Bristol by over fourth lengths in the first race of The Temple Challenge Cup, a race open to novice male crews from colleges, universities or schools. Brown completed the 2,112-meter course in a time of six minutes and 54 seconds. The Henley Royal Regatta features a knockout-style competition with just two crews in head-to-head format. The Brown freshmen earned bronze at the IRA National Championship and won gold at the EARC Eastern Sprints.
The Brown freshmen will continue the Temple Challenge Cup on Thursday when they face Edinburgh University. The Brown varsity eight will compete in the Ladies' Challenge Plate event on Friday.
