Men’s Crew Opens Head of the Charles, Freshmen Set Course Record
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Brown freshmen captured the Club 8+ title for the second straight year as the Bears kicked off the first day of competition in grand fashion at the Head of the Charles Regatta on Saturday in Cambridge, Mass.
The freshman boat retained the Club 8+title in highly impressive fashion, setting a new course record with a time of 14:26.7, finishing over 14 seconds faster than last year's record setting Brown freshman 8+. Boston University finished second, 13 seconds back in 14:39, while Northeastern placed third in a time of 14:51.
Brown had a second entry, which included both the fourth varsity and novice freshman oarsman. The boat finished 23rd overall in the event to qualify for next year's event. The Bears also had two alumni eight in the field, finishing 16th and 36th overall.
On Sunday, Brown will race three entries in the Championship 8+. The racing begins at 2:54 and can be viewed online at http://www.hocr.org/the-regatta/live-webcast/
Since its origin in 1965, the Head Of The Charles Regatta has welcomed the world's best crew teams to the banks of the Charles River for the ultimate two-day rowing competition. The event attracts over 9,000 athletes and 300,000 spectators.
