Camden, N.J. – Brown men's crew has made the trek down to the Cooper River for the 2011 Intercollegiate Racing Association (IRA) Regatta, the collegiate championship for the men's heavyweight division. The Bears, which are ranked sixth in the latest coaches poll, look to follow in the footsteps of their female counterparts, and go from the six position in the standings to national champs.
While the University of Washington and California-Berkeley have been considered early favorites, Brown boasts all three of their boats (V8, 2V8 and F8) in the top-eight of the final IRA Coaches Poll. The varsity eight boat was ranked sixth, while the second varsity came in at seven and the freshman boat at eight.
The Bears are coming off a fourth-place finish at the Eastern Sprints in which they were just a second off the pace behind third-place Wisconsin. Bruno was just over three seconds behind Ivy League-rivals Harvard and Princeton who finished first and second, respectively.
The opening heats at IRA have Washington/Brown in heat one, Cal/Wisconsin in heat two and Harvard/Princeton in heat three, as the seeded pairings in the middle of the course, with two to progress to the semi in each heat.
The second varsity field will be headed by Washington, but features several deep teams. Last year the Huskies and Brown were the class of the division, as both broke the course record in their final.
Fans unable to attend the event will be able to keep track of all the action with live audio and video of the 2011 Championships. Listeners without web access may tune in to the IRA Championships via telephone connection at: (508) 534-7389.
