Derby, CT – Despite coming off a weekend of travel to the San Diego Crew Classic last week, the Brown men’s crew turned in an impressive showing at Yale on Saturday morning, winning the first and second varsity eights races against the Bulldogs. Bruno’s top boat edged out Yale in one of the more exciting races of the day, crossing the line in 5:38.0 to beat the Bulldogs by about four seats.
In spite of a moderate headwind and the ensuing chop, times were fast across the board for the morning due to a strong tail current. Brown’s varsity eight led the charge for Bruno, rowing the course in 5:38.0 to edge Yale, which crossed the line in 5:39.8.
The second varsity eights followed, as the Bears took their second victory of the morning with another impressive race. Brown used a fast start to get out in front of the Bulldogs, and held on to win by open water, crossing the line in 5:47.7. Yale came in just under seven seconds later, at 5:54.0.
The Bulldogs took narrow wins in both the third varsity eight and the varsity four though, winning the two events by a combined five seconds. In the third eight, the Bears fought hard throughout, but couldn’t quite catch Yale, finishing three seconds behind in 5:53.3. The varsity four unfolded in similar fashion, as the Bulldogs crossed the line first in 6:42.5. They were followed by Brown “A” in 6:44.2 and Brown “B” in 7:02.8.
The morning concluded with another tough loss for the Bears in the freshman eight, as Yale took the closest race of the day with a time of 5:49.5. Brown was just a few seats behind though, turning in an impressive 5:50.8.
The Bears will be back in action next weekend, when they host Harvard at 5:10 p.m. on April 10.
