The Brown men's crew will look to reprise their excellent finish of 2008 this weekend at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta, where they will take on some of the top competition from around the world. Last year, the Bears took second in the Championship 8 division, losing only to eventual national champion Washington, and beating a number of elite international boats.
This season the field looks stronger than ever in the Championship race, as several more top boats will be entering the fray. Among the contenders will be the German national team 8 that took gold at the World Championships over the summer, as well as national team boats from both the United States and France. From Britain comes an 8 from the prestigious Leander Rowing Club that is expected to include several Olympic gold medalists. In addition to the elite competition, there will also be the always difficult opposition from colleges around the country, highlighted by Washington, Cal, Stanford, and boats from competing Ivy League schools.
Both the varsity and second varsity 8 will compete in the Championship 8, featuring the best crews from around the world. The freshmen will be tested as well, rowing just their second collegiate race in the Club 8, which perennially attracts a number of top clubs. Joining the current oarsmen will be two alumni 8's, which will also compete in the Champ 8 race.
In addition to their competition on the water, the Bears will also continue work towards raising funds for breast cancer with their Pull for a Cure initiative. The team has already raised an impressive $21,000 in just a few weeks. For more information, or to make a contribution, please follow the link below.
