Providence, RI - Junior guard Jason Forte scored 22 points and senior Mike Martin added 19 points as Brown defeated Yale by a 77-65 score on Friday evening to sweep the series from the Elis and stay unbeaten (2-0) in the Ivy League.
Forte shot 7-of-13 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free-throw line during the game, while leading all players with eight assists, as Brown controlled a turnover-filled contest.
After Yale opened the game with five straight points, the Bears went on a 15-2 run, capped off by Sam Manhanga,s free throw with 12:57 remaining in the half. The Bulldogs responded by scoring nine straight of their own, taking a 16-15 lead when Alex Gamboa converted a long outside jumper with 9:25 to play.
Patrick Powers nailed a 3-pointer to put the Bears back on top and kick off a 16-6 run, which ended with the Bears up 31-22 with 2:39 left in the half. Brown held off a Bulldog charge in the final two minutes for a 36-29 halftime lead.
Yale closed to within four points within the first 3:12 of the second half, but the Bears rallied with eight straight points to open up a 49-37 lead with 13:02 to play. Yale pulled to within nine points, when Casey Hughes made a 3-pointer with 10:25 remaining, cutting Brown,s lead to 54-45. With five second-half 3-pointers and perfect 12-of-12 second-half free-throw shooting until the final minute of the game, the Bears kept Yale from pulling any closer.
Brown led by as many as 21 points in the second half, 75-54, with 1:43 remaining on a layup by Jaime Kilburn.
Martin scored 19 points, including five 3-pointers, for the Bears (6-9, 2-0), who swept the season series against the Bulldogs. Jaime Kilburn tallied 14 points and Powers added 12 in the winning effort. Edwin Draughan led Yale (5-10, 0-2) with 17 points, followed by Matt Minoff, with 13. Yale committed 25 turnovers during the game, compared with 23 for the Bears.
