Bears Fall To SMU in Overtime, 60-56

Dallas, Texas - Brown suffered its second straight heartbreaking loss, this time in overtime, falling to Southern Methodist University, 60-56, in overtime at the Moody Coliseum. The loss drops the Bears to 5-10 overall in their final-non league game of the season, while the Mustangs extended their record to 11-3 overall. Damon Huffman '08 and Mark McAndrew '08 score 13 points each for the Bears.
Earlier in the week, the Bears lost to Cal Davis on a three-point basket at the buzzer.
After senior Marcus Becker tied the game with a free throw with 46 seconds left in the second half, the Bears had a chance to win the game in regulation time. Senior Marcus Becker picked up a steal with 10.8 seconds remaining, and following two Brown timeouts, junior Damon Huffman was unable to get a off a shot as he drove the lane at the end of regulation time.
In overtime, Brown grabbed a 54-52 lead on a lay up by Mark McAndrew. The Mustangs answered with consecutive baskets by Donatas Rackaukas and Derrick Roberts, and a free throw by Jon Killian to grab a 57-54 lead with 1:11 left in overtime.
Becker drove the lane and scored with 37 seconds remaining to bring the Bears to within one point, 57-56. Rackaukas connected on a three-point basket with six seconds left on the clock to ice the game for the Mustangs.
Brown controlled the pace of play in the first half and jumped out to a 10-9 lead on a three-point basket by junior Mark McAndrew with 13:40 left in the half. The Bears were held scoreless for the next eight minutes as SMU built a 19-10 lead.
Sophomore Chris Skrelja stopped the Mustangs' 10-0 streak with a basket at the 5:42 mark of the half. Brown got as close as three points of the Mustangs with 1:36 left in the half on two free throws by senior Nathan Eads, before falling behind by a 26-21 margin at the half.
The Bears came out firing on all cylinders in the second half and grabbed a 40-33 lead with 10:23 remaining on a three-point basket by Skrelja. An 8-0 SMU run gave the Mustangs a 41-40 lead, before McAndrew buried consecutive treys to give the Bears a 46-41 advantage with 6:46 left in the game.
Becker and Huffman led the Bears with 13 points each, while McAndrew grabbed a team high seven rebounds. Skrelja (11 points) and Eads (10 points) also scored in double figures for the Bears.
Two SMU players registered double-doubles, Devon Pearson with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and ike Ofoegbu, who scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
The game against the Mustangs completes a 12-day road trip for the Bears. Brown opens its Ivy League season next Saturday, January 13, against Yale, starting at 7:00 p.m. at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
