Providence, RI - Junior forward Darnell Wilson scored 21 points on 9 of 11 shooting from the field to lead Canisius to a 69-55 non-league win over Brown at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The win lifts the Golden Griffins to 2-8 on the season while the Bears fall to 3-9 overall.
When Brown junior Marcus Becker connected on a three-point jumper with 6:36 left in the first half, Brown trailed by just two points, 24-22. Canisius went on a 12-0 run to break the game open, taking a 36-22 lead with 2;34 left in the half. Senior Jon Popofski scored five points for the Golden Griffins in the spurt.
The closest Brown got in the second half was seven points, trailing 42-35 with 16:22 remaining on a three-point basket by Damon Huffman. But Canisius outscored the Bears20-6 over the next seven-plus minutes to put the game out of reach, 62-41.
Brown received another strong effort from freshman forward Scott Friske, who registered his first career double-double, scoring 19 points and pulling down a game high 10 rebounds. Friske connected on 6 of 11 shots from the field and was 7 of 9 from the free throw line. Sophomore forward Mark MacDonald netted a season high 13 points for the Bears on 6 of 9 shooting from the field. He also pulled down four rebounds.
In addition to Wilson's 21 points, junior Corey Herring scored 14 points, while senior Kevin Downey tossed in 13 points for the Golden Griffins.
The Bears will be on the road for their final non-league game of the season on Saturday (1/7) against Quinnipiac. The game will be televised live by NESN beginning at 12:00 noon.
