Yale Topples Brown, 90-66; Bears’ Cedric Kuakumensah Scores 1,000th Career Point

Providence, R.I. - Senior Brandon Sherrod scored 24 points on perfect 9-of-9 shooting from the field to lead Yale to a 90-66 win over Brown in an Ivy League game at the Pizzitola Sports Center. 

 

Yale, the preseason pick to win the Ivy title, extended its record to 11-5 overall, 2-0 in the Ivy League, while Brown fell to 5-11, 0-2 in Ivy play.

"This was a tough night for us," said Brown head coach Mike Martin. "Give Yale a lot of credit. That's a talented, well coached team.  Hopefully we can learn from the lesson Yale taught us tonight."
 

Kuakumensah became the 26th player in Brown history to score 1,000 or more points when he connected on his first shot in the opening 20 seconds of the game. He finished with a team high 13 points, while pulling down eight rebounds and is now 24th on Brown's all-time scoring list with 1,011 career points.

 

Freshman Corey Daugherty added 11 points for the Bears, while junior Tavon Blackmon chipped in with 10 points, all in the first half.

 

Bears' junior forward Steven Spieth scored just four points, but pulled-down a game high 13 rebounds.

 

The one-two punch of Sherrod and Sam Downey gave the Bulldogs a strong presence in the paint, combining for 17-of-20 shooting.  Downey added 18 points for the Bulldogs, connecting on 8-of-11 field goals.  Sherrod had seven rebounds to go with his 24 points. 

 

Jack Montague chipped in with 11 points for the Bulldogs.

 

With the score tied, 19-19, Yale went on a 14-2 spurt to break the game open and build a 33-21 advantage with 2:18 left in the half.

 

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 13 points, 40-27, at the half on a trey by Anthony Dallier with 24 seconds remaining. Sherrod had 15 points in the opening 20 minutes.

 

The Bears cut the Yale lead to 10 points in the opening minute of the second half, 43-33, on a trey by junior JR Hobbie.

 

Yale went on a 13-2 run to put the game out of reach, 56-35, with Montague scoring five points in the run.

 

Next week, Brown hosts Princeton on Friday, January 29 at 6:00 pm, and Penn on Saturday, January 30 at 8:00 pm at the Pizzitola Sports Center.  Both games will be televised by the American Sports Network.
