Brown Athletics Announces 2013 Award Winners at Fifth Annual Senior Luncheon
The Fifth Annual Brown Athletics Senior Celebration and Awards Luncheon was held at Andrews Dining Hall on Monday, May 20, 2013. Over 275 student-athletes, coaches, staff and distinguished guests were in attendance at the banquet to celebrate another year of success in competition, in the classroom and in the community. President Christina Paxson and Director of Athletics Jack Hayes each took the opportunity to address the room and acknowledge the accomplishments and contributions of the class of 2013.

Men's Basketball Team Awards Presented At Annual Team Banquet
Brown men’s basketball held its annual team banquet and awards dinner on Sunday evening with a group of players, coaches, alumni, parents and staff members attending the event at Fleming’s Steakhouse in downtown Providence. Head coach Mike Martin and his coaching staff presented several team awards, while each of Brown’s three seniors – Stephen Albrecht (Crown Point, IN), Tyler Ponticelli and Matt Sullivan – spoke about their Brown experience.

TJ Sorrentine to be Inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame
Former Vermont standout and current associate head basketball coach at Brown, TJ Sorrentine, has been named to the 2013 New England Basketball Hall of Fame. On Saturday, June 22, Sorrentine will join other honorees representing a variety of categories including coaches, players, teams and special contributors at a major ceremony at the DCU Center in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Brown Basketball Announces 2013 Summer Camps
Brown men’s basketball coach Mike Martin and his coaching staff will host three Summer Camps in the upcoming summer, two Elite Overnight Camps for boys in 9th to 12th grades, and a coed Day camp for ages 7-16. All camps will be held on the Brown campus.

Sean McGonagill and Matt Sullivan Named All-Ivy; Cedric Kuakumensah Named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year
The All-Ivy Men’s Basketball Team was released today with Brown junior point guard Sean McGonagill (Brookfield, IL) earning First Team All-Ivy honors and senior guard Matt Sullivan (Wilmette, IL) being named Second Team All-Ivy in a vote of the Ancient Eight men’s basketball coaches. In addition, Bears’ freshman forward Cedric Kuakumensah (Worcester, MA) was named the Ivy League’s Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the first freshman to claim the award for defensive prowess.

Brown Eliminates Princeton, 80-67, To Finish 7-7 In The Ivy League
Junior guard Sean McGonagill scored a game high 24 points, and three Brown seniors scored in double figures, to lead the Bears to an 80-67 win over Princeton, eliminating the Tigers from Ivy League title contention and giving Harvard the Ivy league Championship. Brown finishes its season winning four of its last five games for a 13-15 record overall, 7-7 in the Ivy League.

Penn’s Late Free Throws Topple Brown, 66-64
Junior Miles Cartwright scored 25 points, including two free throws with 0.7 remaining, rallying Penn to a controversial 66-64 Ivy League win over Brown at the Pizzitola Sports Center, snapping a three-game Bears’ winning streak.

Brown Hosts Penn and Princeton In Final Regular Season Weekend
Brown enters the final week of the regular season at home against Penn and Princeton with a lot on the line as the Bears look to maintain its third place standing in the Ivy League. In a turn-around season for the Bears, coach Mike Martin's team hosts Penn on Friday, March 8, starting at 7 pm, and Princeton on Saturday, March 9, at 6 pm. Brown's three seniors - Stephen Albrecht, Tyler Ponticelli and Matt Sullivan - will be honored in Senior Day festivities at the Pizzitola Sports Center prior to Saturday's game against the Tigers.

Tucker Halpern’s Buzzer-Beater Lifts Brown Over Columbia, 61-58
With just 1.1 seconds remaining and the score tied, 58-58, junior forward Tucker Halpern converted a trey on an inbounds pass as the final buzzer sounded to lift Brown to a 61-58 Ivy League win over Columbia. Senior Matt Sullivan became the 26th player in Brown basketball history to score his 1,000th career point.

Sophomore forward Rafael Maia registered a double-double with a career high 22 points and 13 rebounds, while junior forward Tucker Halpern also scored 22 points, to power Brown past Cornell, 84-65, in an Ivy League game at the Newman Arena, snapping a 13-game drought against the Big Red.

Brown Battles First Place Harvard and Dartmouth At Home
Brown completes its four-game home-stand at the Pizzitola Sports Center with a re-match against Harvard on Friday evening, February 22 at 7pm, and Dartmouth on Saturday, February 23 at 6pm. The Bears took Harvard to double overtime before falling to the Crimson earlier this year in Cambridge, while earning a win over the BIg Green in Hanover. Brown senior guard Matt Sullivan (Wilmette, IL) has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division I Men’s Basketball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Director’s of America. Christian Webster scored seven of his 16 points in the second overtime period as first place Harvard outscored Brown, 11-4, in the final overtime period to escape with an 89-82 win over the Bears. Brown falls to 8-10 overall, 2-2 in the Ivy League, with both of its league losses coming in overtime. Harvard extended its record to 12-6 overall and 4-0 in Ivy play.

Brown Basketball Hosts Special Olympics Clinic
Both the Brown men’s and women’s basketball teams and coaching staffs hosted a clinic for Rhode Island Special Olympics on Wednesday, January 9 at the Olney Margolies Athletic Center on the Brown campus. Brown players demonstrated the fundamentals of basketball and participated in drills with Special Olympians from throughout the State of Rhode Island and Southeast Massachusetts. Brown Falters In Overtime, Falls To St. Francis, 76-72
Junior Ben Mockford hit back-to-back treys in overtime to spark a 10-1 St. Francis (NY) run and lead the Terriers to a 76-72 overtime win over Brown at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The loss drops Brown to 2-3 overall, while St. Francis evens its record at 2-2. Brown freshman forward Cedric Kuakumensah sent the game into overtime with a rebound and lay-up with 33 seconds left on the clock. Brett Jones tried to win it for the Terriers, but his shot with two seconds left in regulation was rejected by Bears’ sophomore forward Rafael Maia to send the game into overtime.

Brown Falls To Bryant, 68-61
Sophomore guard Dyami Starks scored 16 of his game high 25 points in the second half to lead Bryant to a 68-61 win over Brown at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Brown freshman forward Cedric Kuakumensah scored a career high 14 points to lead the Bears, connecting 6-of-8 shots from the field. He completed the double-double by grabbing 11 rebounds. Brown falls to 2-2 with the loss, while Bryant extends its record to 2-2 overall.

Rafael Maia’s 21 Points Leads Brown Over Maine, 70-68
Sophomore forward Rafael Maia scored a career high 21 points and Brown held off a late Maine challenge to earn a 70-68 non-league victory over the Black Bears at Alfond Arena. The win on the road, Brown’s second of the year, gives the Bears a 2-1 record, while Maine falls to 0-3. The Bears won just one game away from the Pizzitola Sports Center all of last year.

Central Connecticut Spoils Halpern’s Return With 86-71 Win over Brown
Sophomore guard Kyle Vinales scored a game high 28 points, hitting 9-of-13 field goals, including 4-of-5 treys, to lead Central Connecticut (1-2) to an 86-71 non-league win over Brown at Detrick Gymnasium, giving the Bears (1-1) their first setback of the young season. The Brown program breathed a collective sigh of relief when junior forward Tucker Halpern entered the game at the 10-minute mark of the first half, setting foot on the court for the first time sine March 2011. He missed all of last season and Brown’s opening game following a long illness.

Mike Martin’s Coaching Debut a Success, Brown Topples Binghamton, 58-49
The Mike Martin coaching era at Brown successfully tipped-off this afternoon at the Events Center with the Bears rallying for a 58-49 victory over Binghamton, with the Bears’ new emphasis on defense holding the Bearcats to just one point in the last seven minutes on 0-of 10-shooting. Junior Matt Sullivan scored 18 points and junior Sean McGonagill added 16 points to lead the Bears attack.

Standout Returns To Help
There’s a reason Mike Martin had the opportunity to return to his alma mater and grab his first head coaching job as a mere 30-year-old. A starter on a school-record four straight winning teams for the Bears a decade ago, Martin became the fourth-youngest head coach in the country last spring because Brown needs his help. With Jesse Agel at the basketball helm last season, the Bears finished 8-23 overall and 2-12 in the Ivies. That finish came on the heels of two11-win seasons. The Bears haven’t won more than five Ivy League games in a single season in five years.

Brown University has named former Brown basketball standout Mike Martin ‘04 the 31st head men’s basketball coach in the program’s 106-year history in an announcement made today by Athletic Director Jack Hayes. Martin is the fourth youngest head men’s basketball coach in Division I.
