Hanover, New Hampshire – Sophomore Tucker Halpern scored 16 of his game high 25 points in the first half, and freshman Sean McGonagill connected on six of six free throws in the last two minutes, to lead Brown to a 75-66 Ivy League win over Dartmouth at Leede Arena.
The win lifts the Bears to 9-12 overall and 2-5 in the Ivy League, while Dartmouth falls to 5-16, 1-6 in Ivy play.
Halpern's 25 points, just one short of his career high, came on 11 of 20 shooting from the field. He also pulled down seven rebounds. McGonagill just missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds.
The Big Green was led by Nick Jackson with 17 points. Warwick, Rhode Island native David Rufful, registered his first career double-double, with 10 points and a game high 12 rebounds.
Leading 39-34 at the half, Brown came out strong after intermission and pulled ahead by a 12-point margin, 58-46, with 10:10 left in the game on a trey by Halpern. The Big Green came storming back and pulled to within four points, 60-56, following two free throws by RJ Griffin with 6:03 left in the game.
Williams hit a big trey to extend Brown's lead to 63-56, and the Bears coasted the rest of the way, hitting 10 of 11 free throws to put the game away.
The Bears had the better of play in the first half, leading by as many as eight points, 15-7, following a trey by senior Garrett Leffelman with 10:53 left in the half.
After Dartmouth tied the game, 32-32, with 2:32 remaining, Brown out-scored the Big Green 7-2 for the remainder of the half to grab a 39-34 lead at intermission. Halpern's 16 first half points, on 7 of 12 shooting, was the difference for the Bears.
Brown returns to the hardwood tomorrow night (Saturday), traveling to Boston, Mass., to face Harvard. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
