Yale Tops Brown, 69-64, In Ivy Opener
Providence, RI - Junior center Greg Mangano scored 23 points and pulled down a career high 17 rebounds to lead Yale (8-7, 1-0 Ivy) to a 69-64 win over Brown (6-8, 0-1 Ivy) in the Ivy League opener for both teams at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Sophomore Tucker Halpern led the Bears with 16 points and seven rebounds. The two teams will have a re-match next Saturday afternoon in New Haven.
Mangano's 23 points came on 11 of 17 shooting from the field. Reggie Willhite scored 19 points for the Elis, connecting on 8 of 11 field goals.
Halpern's 16 points led three Brown players in double figures. Freshman Sean McGonagill scored 14 points, handed out six assists and grabbed five rebounds, while Bears' senior Garrett Leffelman chipped in with 10 points.
While the Bears connected on 16 of 19 free throws for the game, they were held to 36-percent shooting from the field (21 of 56).
Yale led by as many as nine points in the first half, 20-11, with 9:48 left. The Bears out-scored the Elis, 17-2, over the next four minutes to grab a 28-22 advantage with 5:46 remaining. Halpern scored the last 11 straight points for the Bears with three treys and a long jump shot.
Yale grabbed a 37-36 lead at the half on Mangano's lay-up at the buzzer. Mangano finished the half with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Bears stayed close in the half behind sparkling 12 of 12 shooting from the free throw line.
In a tightly contested second half, McGonagill's jump shot with 7:59 remaining tied the game for the eighth time, 58-58.
The Elis built their lead back up to five points, 66-61, holding the lead into the last 2:00 of the game. A free throw by Brown's Andrew McCarthy with 1:39 remaining made it 66-62.
The Bears cut the Yale lead to two points, 66-64, on a lay-up by Leffelman with 24 seconds left on the clock.
Willhite connected on one of two free throws with 20 seconds remaining to put the Elis ahead 67-64. The Bears had a chance to tie it, but Halpern's trey with five seconds left hit the front of the rim and bounced out.
Brown hosts Quinnipiac on Monday, January 17, in its final non-league game of the season. The matinee tip-off on the Martin Luther King Day holiday is 1:00 p.m. at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
