Late Basket Lifts Army Over Brown, 88-86
Providence, RI – Freshman Mitch McDonald's lay-up with 21 seconds remaining broke an 84-84 tie and lifted Army to an 88-86 win over Brown at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The win evens Army's record at 6-6, while Brown falls to 4-5 overall.

Senior Peter Sullivan led Brown with 24 points and seven rebounds.  He connected on 7 of 14 field goals and 8 of 9 free throws.  Freshman Sean McGonagill netted a career high 18 points and handed out five assists, while senior Garrett Leffelman added 17 points for the Bears.


Sullivan's 24 points tonight enabled him to continue to climb Brown career scoring ladder. He jumped into 14th place on Brown's all-time scoring list with 1,172 career points, passing Mike Waitkus, who scored 1,165 points for the Bears from 1982-1986.


Brown continued its strong shooting from the free throw line, connecting on 24 of 27 shots from the charity stripe. The Cadets held a 38-26 rebound margin over the Bears, out-rebounding the Bears 22-6 in the decisive second half. 


Army connected on 12 of 20 treys for the game, while Brown converted 8 of 21 treys.


Jeremy Hence led Army with 21 points on 8 of 12 shooting from the field, including 4 of 4 shooting from behind the three-point arc.  Julian Simmons scored 17 points, while Ella Ellis tossed in 16 points.  McDonald finished with eight points and a game high seven assists.


Brown led by as many as 12 points in the second half, 52-40, following a Sullivan trey at the 19:11 mark early in the second half. Army outscored the Bears 10-0 to pull to within one point, 52-51, with 17:06 remaining following a trey by Simmons.


 The Army three-point barrage continued with treys by Chris Welker, Simmons and Nathan Hedgecock, and a lay-up by Hence to lift the Cadets to a seven-point advantage, 64-57, with 12:50 left to play


Brown out-scored the Cadets 10-0 over the next three minutes to grab a 68-64 lead following a McGonagill lay-up.


The Bears maintained the lead and pulled ahead by an 82-77 margin with 4:03 remaining following a lay-up by sophomore Matt Sullivan.  But a three-point play by Ellis and a jump shot by Hedgecock knotted the score, 82-82.


Brown took the lead once again, 84-82 on two free throws by McGonagill, but McDonald tied the game for the seventh time, 84-84, on a bank shot from 13 feet.


The Bears got off to a sluggish start after a 15-day lay-off for final exams, falling behind the Cadets by an early 15-6 margin. Back-to-back treys by Brown freshman Sean McGonagill and senior Peter Sullivan, and a lay-up by senior Adrian Williams quickly cut the Army lead to 15-14 with 13:45 left in the half.


Brown grabbed its first lead of the half, 28-27, on a trey by sophomore Tucker Halpern, and extended its lead to eight points, 41-33, on three free throws by Sullivan at the 2:48 mark.


Senior Garret Leffelman's three-point play with 37 seconds left in the half gave Brown a 46-36 advantage, before settling on a 46-38 lead at intermission.


Brown is back in action again on Wednesday, December 29, traveling to New Britain, Connecticut to face Central Connecticut.  Game time is 7:00 p.m. at Detrick Gymnasium.
