PROVIDENCE, RI - Brown senior catcher Greg Metzger (Trumbull, CT) has been signed to a free agent contract with the Oakland Athletics.
The A's offered Metzger a contract after the conclusion of the Major League baseball draft on the evening of June 5.
He will report to Tempe, Arizona for two weeks of extended spring training beginning next Wednesday. At the conclusion of two weeks, Metzger will be assigned to the Vancouver Canadians of the Northwest League for short-season Class A ball. The Northwest League season begins June 17.
Metzger, a co-captain and four-year starting catcher for the Bears, was named All-New England and was a unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection this spring. The senior hit .335 with a team-high nine homers and 39 RBI. He started 47 of 48 games and hit .403 with seven homers and 23 RBI in Ivy League games. The catcher also threw out 19 out of 32 base runners from behind the plate. Metzger tied a Brown single-game record this season by blasting three home runs in a 9-1 victory over Cornell on April 14.
On May 30, Metzger participated in the twenty-eighth annual New England Intercollegiate Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Game at Boston's Fenway Park.
The Bears (25-24, 13-7) set the school record for wins this season with 25 and finished tied for first place in the Ivy League's Red Rolfe Division.
