Sophomore Jeff Nichols (Medford, NJ) hit a homer in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to edge the Brown Bears over the Black Bears 5-4 in game one of a doubleheader with Maine. Brown swept Maine 5-4 in game one and 6-2 in game two. Maine was ranked number one in New England and seventh in the North East. Brown is now 10-20-1 overall and 3-5 in the Ivy League.
Senior Justin Lebowitz (Aberdeen, NJ) pitched all seven innings for Brown, he struck out eight batters and walked only three. Nichols was 2-4 with a run scored and a runner batted in, in game one. Junior Matt Kutler (Omaha, NE) was 3-4 with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to put Brown up by two. Kutler scored one run and batted three runners in.
Freshman Shaun McNamara (Worcester, MA) pitched in four innings for Brown in game two. He struck-out six batters and gave up no earned runs. Freshman Cameron Johnson (Berkeley, CA), junior Harris Frankel (Marietta, GA), and senior Dan Spring (Washington, DC) all came in at relief pitching in one inning a piece.
Johnson, Kutler, and Nichols were all 2-3 with one run scored in game two. Kutler and Nichols also had two RBI a piece. Junior Bobby Deeb (West St. Paul, MN) was 1-3 with two runs scored as junior John Magaletti (Scarsdale, NY) went 1-2 with a run batted in. Sophomore Cameron Mitchell (Apex, NC) had seven put outs as sophomore Chris Contrino (Marlboro, NJ) added four. Contrino was 1-4 with one run scored.
The Bears will travel to Dartmouth this Friday, April 18 and Saturday, April 19 for doubleheaders both starting at noon.
