PROVIDENCE, RI - Freshman pitcher Chris Davidson (Wolfville, Nova Scotia) threw a one-hitter and senior Greg Metzger (Trumbull, CT) tied a Brown single-game record with three homeruns as the Brown baseball team swept a doubleheader from the Cornell Big Red on Sunday.
In game one, the Bears (15-16, 5-3 Ivy) pounded out 10 hits to earn a convincing 9-1 victory before notching 20 hits to come away with a 19-11 win in game two.
Davidson (1-0) earned his first collegiate win for the Bears, holding the Big Red (10-17, 2-6 Ivy) to one run while striking out a career-high thirteen batters.
Metzger was an offensive force in the first game as he crushed three homers to finish 3 for 4 with five RBIs. The senior went 2 for 5 with two RBIs in the nightcap to round out a 5 for 9, seven RBI day.
Sophomore Rob Deeb (West St. Paul, MN) went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI in game one and freshman Jeff Nichols (Medford, NJ) added an RBI double for the Bears.
In game two, senior southpaw John Cappello (2-1) (Cranston, RI) picked up the victory in relief, going seven strong innings while giving up two earned runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts.
Offensively the Bears broke out for 20 hits in the second game, including seven for extra bases. Freshman James Lowe (Asheboro, NC) led the offensive surge as he blasted two homeruns to finish 2 for 5 with six RBIs.
Senior Shaun Gallagher (West Chester, PA) went 3 for 4 with a double, a homerun and two RBIs and fellow senior Rick Lynn (Towaco, NJ) was 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs. Sophomore Matt Kutler (Omaha, NE) also had a strong game as he went 3 for 6 with a double, a triple and three RBIs. Fellow sophomore John Magaletti (Scarsdale, NY) rounded out the attack with three hits and an RBI.
The Bears return to action on Thursday, April 18 for a doubleheader with Pace and Army at Pace beginning at 1 p.m.
