Baseball Splits Ivy Doubleheader with Princeton

PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown baseball team split an Ivy League doubleheader with the Princeton Tigers on Saturday afternoon, winning the first game 5-3 before falling 7-0 in the nightcap.
In game one, the Bears (13-6, 3-3 Ivy) got a boost from senior hurler Jon Stern (5-2) (Long Valley, NJ) who went the distance to earn his fifth victory of the season. Stern went all seven innings and held the Tigers to three runs on six hits while striking out eight batters.
Princeton (12-15, 7-3 Ivy) jumped out to a two-run lead in the top of the first but Brown quickly answered with three runs in the home half of the inning to go ahead 3-2. Senior Greg Metzger (Trumbull, CT) and freshman James Lowe (Asheboro, NC) each added RBI singles for the Bears in the first frame.
The Bears added two more runs in the fifth to move out to a 5-2 lead. Sophomore Matt Kutler (Omaha, NE) highlighted the inning by roping an RBI triple to left field.
Metzger went 1 for 3 with two RBIs to lead the Bears offensively. Freshman Adam Royster (Bethesda, MD) also added a triple for the Bears in game one.
In game two, Princeton was ready right from beginning as the Tigers' Pat Boran homered to left center on the first pitch of the game to put Princeton up 1-0. The Tigers added another run in the sixth to go ahead 2-0.
The crushing blow for the Bears came in the top of the seventh when the Tigers scored five unearned runs to move out to a commanding 7-0 lead.
Senior Jamie Grillo (2-2) (Bellingham, MA) threw all nine innings for the Bears, giving up only one earned run on nine hits while striking out two.
Sophomore Rob Deeb (West St. Paul, MN) went 2 for 3 with a double to lead the Bears offensively.
The Bears will be back in action tomorrow for a doubleheader with the Cornell Big Red at Aldrich-Dexter Field beginning at noon.
