PAWTUCKET, RI - The Brown baseball team split a doubleheader with the Rhode Island Rams on Wednesday at McCoy Stadium, winning the first game 6-0, before dropping an extra-inning 6-5 decision in game two.
Senior southpaw John Cappello (1-1) (Cranston, RI) twirled a two-hit complete game shutout to earn his first victory of the season for the Bears in game one. Cappello did not allow a run and struck out six Rams on the afternoon.
The Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third. The highlight of the inning was a perfectly executed suicide squeeze by sophomore Rob Deeb (West St. Paul, MN) that plated fellow sophomore John Magaletti (Scarsdale, NY) with the Bears' second run. Brown later added two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a commanding 6-0 lead.
Deeb went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and senior Greg Metzger (Trumbull, CT) went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Freshman James Lowe (Asheboro, NC) also went 2 for 3 with a double.
In game two, the Bears held a 4-2 lead heading into the seventh inning when the Rams scored three runs to go ahead 5-4. However, Brown came back with a run in the bottom of the inning when Deeb laced a two-out RBI single to score Cappello with the game-tying run. URI answered with a run in the top of the eighth to earn the 6-5 victory.
Deeb continued to swing a hot bat in the second game as he went 2 for 3 with two RBIs once again. Freshman Chris Contrino (Marlboro, NJ) also added an RBI triple for the Bears in the fifth inning.
Junior Justin Lebowitz (Aberdeen, NJ) started on the hill for Brown and went four and a third innings, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out three.
The Bears (12-15, 2-2 Ivy) will resume their Ivy League schedule on Saturday, April 13 in a doubleheader with the Princeton Tigers at Aldrich-Dexter Field beginning at noon.
