Providence, R.I. - The Bears used a five-run seventh to topple in-state rival Bryant 8-6 on Thursday afternoon, running their win streak to five straight. Senior Dan Shapiro (Basking Ridge, N.J.) was three-for-three with two runs scored, while classmate Robert Papenhause (Hillsborough, CA) continued his clutch hitting with three RBI's. With the win, Brown improves to 12-12-1 on the season, while Bryant falls to 23-10.
The teams traded runs early, as the Bulldogs struck first with one in the top of the second, followed by Brown scoring twice in the bottom of the inning. Both runs came off a triple from Papenhause, giving Bruno a 2-1 lead. However, Bryant's bats got hot in the third, as the Bulldogs came up with six straight two-out hits, scoring five runs in the process to go up 6-2.
Though Brown got one back later in the frame, the middle innings were scoreless, and the Bears entered the seventh still trailing. After a quick out to start the inning, Bruno then came up with four straight hits, including a two-run home run by senior Matt Nuzzo (Everett, MA), and scored five of their own to regain the lead. Sophomore Matt Kimball (Nashville, TN) then entered the game and shut down Bryant for the last two innings, earning his sixth save of the season to tie the Brown single season saves record. Three days after being named the Ivy League Pitcher of the Week, Kimball struck out five Bulldogs in his brief outing to close out the game.
The Bears will be back in action this weekend, when they travel to Hanover for a four-game series against Dartmouth.
