PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Brown baseball team opened its Ivy League season with a doubleheader split against the Penn Quakers on Saturday at Murphy Field. The Bears captured game one 2-1 and fell 14-12 in game two on a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning.
In game one, senior Jonathan Stern (4-3) (Long Valley, NJ) picked up his fourth victory of the season, going six and a third innings while giving up one run on two hits. Stern also recorded six strikeouts on the afternoon. Senior Bryant Romo (1-2) (Arcadia, CA) came on for the last two outs of the game to earn his second save of the season.
Offensively the Bears (10-13, 1-1 Ivy) were led by sophomore John Magaletti (Scarsdale, NY) who went 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Senior Rick Lynn (Towaco, NJ) and sophomore Matt Kutler (Omaha, NE) each added a triple for the Bears.
In game two, the Bears jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after two innings but the Quakers would eventually come all the way back to tie the score 11-11 heading into the ninth inning. The Bears plated a run in the top of the ninth to pull ahead 12-11, but Penn's Matt Horn hit a game-ending three-run homer to left field in the bottom of the inning to give the Quakers a 14-12 victory.
Senior Greg Metzger (Trumbull, CT) had a big day at the plate for the Bears as he went a perfect 4 for 4 with a homerun and two RBIs. Kutler also ripped a homer on the day as he finished 4 for 5 with three RBIs. Sophomore Rob Deeb (West St. Paul, MN) had two doubles and an RBI and Lynn extended his hitting streak to eleven games with two singles.
Romo took the loss on the hill for the Bears in relief of sophomore Sam Jennings (New Ashford, MA) and junior Justin Lebowitz (Aberdeen, NJ).
The Bears (10-13, 1-1 Ivy) return to action for a doubleheader at Columbia on April 7 beginning at 12:30 p.m.
