DURHAM, NC - The Brown baseball team wrapped up its spring break trip by dropping two games to Duke, 7-3 and 10-8, on Saturday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field.
In game one, the Bears held a 2-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Blue Devils exploded for five runs to pull ahead 5-2. The Blue Devils added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth before Brown pushed across a run in the top of the ninth to make the final score 7-3.
Senior hurler Jonathan Stern (3-2) (Long Valley, NJ) suffered the loss on the hill for the Bears as he went eight innings, giving up seven runs on nine hits while striking out three.
Offensively the Bears were led by senior Rick Lynn (Towaco, NJ) who went 2 for 4 with a double and a homerun. Five Bears each added one hit apiece for Brown.
In game two, the Bears held a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth when Duke came up with six runs to jump out in front 9-4. Brown came back with three runs in the sixth to cut the Blue Devil lead to 9-7, but Duke added a run in the bottom of the inning to go ahead 10-7. The Bears made one last attempt to overcome the three-run deficit in the seventh, but they could only manage one run and fell 10-8.
Junior pitcher Dan Spring (1-3) (Washington, D.C.) started for the Bears and went four and a third innings, giving up eight runs on seven hits with one strikeout.
Lynn had another big game offensively as he went 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore Matt Kutler (Omaha, NE) went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI and freshman Cameron Mitchell (Lincoln, RI) (Athens Drive HS/Raleigh, NC) went 2 for 2 with a double. Seniors Shaun Gallagher (West Chester, PA) and Greg Metzger (Trumbull, CT) also added one homerun apiece for the Bears.
The Bears are now 7-12 and will return to action at Boston College on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
